I was just reading the alumni magazine and saw an advertisement for the network. It got me wondering if I was going to get it. I live in Jersey City and have Comcast. I called them and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is going to be a part of my plan! Good news. I don't watch football games at home, but I will definitely use it for all other sports.

I wonder if that means they struck a deal with Comcast all across the nation or is this just a regional deal?

I suspect that this local Comcast company opted to take advantage of the out of market rate. I don't see any deal with Comcast, within the Big Ten region, any time soon.

While I'm no expert on the subject, I would think that we're getting close to deadline for the cable companies to sign a deal and get the games up and running for the start of the season. It can't be anywhere near as easy as flipping a switch.
Now may be the time to make the switch to DTV if you want the games at home, I would be shocked if there isn't a major service backup the weeks leading up to the opener due to these reasons.
Best of luck to all you Time Warnerers in the Columbus area.

I do not recall the actual amount of time, but when Sports Time Ohio was under negotiations, the process went up until the last day or so before the first telecast. So, there is still plenty of time to sign agreements.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I thought I'd post this little tidbit from the B10 Network FAQ.

Q: Will the Big Ten Network carry the games I want to see?
A: The Big Ten Conference has entered into long-term agreements with ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 and the Big Ten Network for its home football games. The agreement with the Big Ten Network lasts for 20 years. As part of this agreement, the Big Ten Network will be able to air over 35 football games per year. In the selection process, the Big Ten Network will be able to choose 2nd three times and 3rd three times during the 12-week season, so half the time the network will have either the second or third pick of games. Once ESPN and ESPN2 have selected their games, all remaining games will be produced and distributed by the Big Ten Network.

I guess I shouldn't be all doom and gloom about the change. I'm on DishNetwork and don't plan on switching to DirectTV. I should be grateful I don't have to fork out $110+ for GamePlan any more. Looks like I'll still get a few games and the ones I don't have should be on at a sports bar anyway...

I'll second that OSU SPORTS... I signed up for direct tv today and by signing up for the NFL season ticket at a price of $69.99 for four months I will get their Premier choice package which is normally $99.99 a month, free for four months. So I basically got the NFL season ticket for free. They also threw in the Nascar in car package for free. I was holding out till I saw this deal.

If you go to Big Ten Network, you can type in your zip code, and they provide a little grid with info pertaining to your area and service. They also have a form letter that will email your provider, basically doing your dirty work for you and letting your provider know that you are an ohio state fan, and that you want them to pick it up. Don't know yet whether or not it will help/they give a rats ass, but it can't hurt I guess. I have done this several times now and I think I am going to keep pimping dish network to pick it up. If not, oh well, my folks have directv and a much larger tv than I do . And yes, it is a party, so the more the merrier.

Great find schwab - that should be added to a sticky thread - I think we will be getting a lot of "does anyone know if the Big Ten Network covers my area" questions up to and after the start of season.

There is a great interview with Jim Delaney on this link. He debunks the lame attempt by cable companies to devalue the BTN. As I have said previously on this thread, the BTN is priced competitively. For those TRYING to compare ESPN to BTN, keep this in mind. The cable companies want you to focus on the $1.10 charge WITHIN the 8 state region of the Big Ten. So if you are going to compare it to a NATIONAL product, like ESPN, you need to factor in the rate for the other states in the US(we have more than 8 states, ya know). It breaks down to about 30 cents! Now how much was ESPN again? It's clolse to $3.00! Now I realize that the BTN won't be showing spelling bees, dog shows and Paper, Rock and scissors championships(I still can't believe they showed that), but they will have old OSU games in all sports to record, in the off season.

Delaney also addresses the weak contention that the cable companies are looking out for the consumer by not having everyone pay for something they don't want. Did the cable companies EVER ask the consumer what they wanted on basic cable? Nobody asked me if I wanted the Oxygen channel or the many crap stations that comprise basic cable.

Right below the Jim Delaney interview is the cable company response by Karen Baxter from Time Warner. She basically is the sacrificial lamb trotted out by Time Warner to try and laugh it up and make zero good points.

That is truly a great deal. I got something similar to that when I first signed up for Directv. I only subscribe to DTV for part of the year, during football season. Directv shuts off my service when I tell them and they acitvate it whenever I want. This keeps me in touch with my NFL teams and OSU sports. When you live out of state, it keeps you in touch with your Ohio sports teams.
