Coaches are different actors with different methods. See the Big Ten Network clip below for a primer on the divergent styles employed by the conference's coaches ... and simply marvel at the craft.

OSU AD tells fans to drop Time Warner

Gene Smith, OSU's athletic director, officially says that if you want to see the Buckeyes, you need to leave Time Warner. Now. Not that we haven't known that all along, but it's interesting to see someone in a position of authority admit it.

Letter sent out from the Athletic Department today:

"August 20, 2008

Dear Buckeye Fans:
I am writing to update you on the status of negotiations between the Big Ten Network and Time Warner Cable. Today - just 10 days from our kickoff against Youngstown State on the network - there is no deal in place with Time Warner. This is especially disheartening because in addition to the Youngstown State game, the network will also televise our game with Troy University on Sept. 20 and very possibly the conference opener against Minnesota. That means three of the Buckeyes' first five games will be on the network, with the possibility of an additional conference tilt later in the year..."

Dear Buckeye Fans:

Even though i'm doing just that and having Direct TV installed tomorrow- It creeps me out that they are handling it in this manner. I may get slammed, but I think its in poor taste to have coaches and ADs pimp themselves out over this mess. Greed at its worst (by all parties involved).

I don't believe that greed is the emotion that is at the bottom of Time Warner's behavior. If they were all about greed, they would have struck a deal by now.

Instead, they are going to lose customers and revenue. Greed? No.

Their problem is pride. They've let pride get in the way of their own best interests. They have invested their pride in this course of action to the point where the only way out for them is to "win" the negotiations. At least that's the way they see it from their prideful point of view. And yet they look more foolish with each passing day.

Whether it's greed or pride, they are not getting what they want.

Emotions are funny like that. They seldom result in decisions with positive results.

Ohio State Athletics Director Gene Smith

Ohio State Athletics Director Gene Smith says the Big Ten Network and Time Warner Cable are "very unlikely" to reach a deal to televise Buckeye games before the season-opener Aug. 30.
In a "Dear Buckeye Fans" letter e-mailed today, Smith urged fans to consider switching from Time Warner, the dominant cable company in central Ohio, to a provider that offers BTN.
"While negotiations are ongoing with Time Warner, it appears very unlikely that an agreement will be reached before the first game of the year, and anything beyond that is problematic," he said.
Smith called Time Warner's decision not to carry the network a "huge disappointment." The letter encouraged fans to go to www.BigTenNetwork.com and type in their ZIP codes to obtain information about providers.
After his letter was e-mailed to season-ticket holders and OSU Alumni Association members, Time Warner issued a statement that Smith had gotten it wrong.
"It appears the university is not being fully briefed on the status of the negotiations," the statement said. "We've had positive discussions with Fox in recent days including the active exchange of proposals. :tongue2:

Of course, in defense of TW, if we were playing, say Texas Tech or Vanderbilt or Kentucky or even Navy or Air Force; anybody other than an in-state Division subliminal team, ESPN might carry the game and we wouldn't need BTN.
