As I feared, Dave Winfield is #15. Great athlete, but his presence on the list as a Big Ten icon demeans the value of being named for everybody else.

Ramzy gets it right in his article.

The Hell with Dave Winfield and all of the Gophers involved in this despicable episode.

I cannot agree more. Have seen that ugly whatever too many times, including when it happened, to even watch that video again. He and his buddies should have been banned from Big Ten basketball after that happened.

His show is on right now, and I watched up til the point where they talked about the fight. It was disgusting, they made it sound like Whitte deserved it and that Winfield and the others were heroes. Winfield didn't even hint that he was sorry, he sounded like he was proud of what he did.

Fuck him, fuck Minnesota, and fuck the Big Ten Network for putting that piece of shit on their list of the supposed 50 greatest icons of the Big Ten.

It seems the BTN is trying to appease every fanbase with this list. There aren't many other IU student/athletes to choose from.

It does tick me off that the next "icon" on the list is Cappelletti. Not that he wasn't deserving of being on the list, but he isn't even the top RB of his decade (Archie). But he deserves to be ranked higher than the greatest golfer of all time?

Well, his brother did die! Seriously, the guy was maybe 5th or 6th best running back of his decade (Archie, Dorsett, Charles White, Anthony Davis) and NEVER competed as a Big Ten athlete. Jesus, what a joke.

I'm just bracing myself for Jesse not being number one.

Of course I have a bias as my avatar shows but if Owens isn't #1 then this list is a complete travesty. His 4 world records in 45 minutes at the Big Ten Championships is still known as one of the best, if not the best performance in modern sports history. That feat is so special that Michigan even has a plaque to commemorate the performance. Of course the plaque doesn't say 'Ohio State' anywhere on it but everyone knows who he ran for. :)

Gee, no mention of whom he was competing for. Why am I not surprised.

My favorite professional football player as a kid. Sent him a Christmas card one year and he sent me a autographed picture. Sure wish I had saved that picture.

Yeah, I have a few signed items of his...met him at the HOF right before he passed away. Nice guy and arguably the greatest QB of all-time.

Updating the list and comparing it to my guesses for the top-15:

Thinking about who's left for the top-15:

......Jesse Owens
......Archie Griffin
......Mark Spitz
......Red Grange
......Jerry Lucas
......John Wooden
......Magic Johnson
#13 Ron Dayne
......Tom Harmon
#14 Otto Graham (I'll be pleasantly surprised if he makes it)
......Nile Kinnick
......Isiah Thomas
......Mateen Cleeves (his bobblehead means he's probably on the list)
......Dan Gable
......Dick Butkus
#15 Dave Winfield (barf, but his bobblehead means he's probably on the list)
......Chic Harley (he won't make it due to lack of public knowledge)

I just about had a shit hemorrhage when I saw Icon #15 flash up on the screen. I watched that game in which Dave Winfield publicly mugged an Ohio Sate player and came within an inch of taking his life or leaving him a quadriplegic for life -- and who then proceeded, along with his team mates, to participate in a televised gang stomping. His behavior, and the behavior of the school and its athletic department afterwards was nothing short of shameful. Certainly a low point for the conference, the school and the player.

If the school still wishes to honor him so be it. You can only talk about Paul Giel, Biggie Munn and Bronco Nagurski so may times -- but for the Big Ten Conference to so honor him is way beyond the pale of decency and thought.

Minnesota has plenty of other choices for people they could honor who are still alive and/or didn't play that long ago...Bud Grant, Carl Eller, Bobby Bell, Sandy Stephens, Charlie Sanders, Tony Dungy...the fact they seem enamored with Winfield is beyond disgusting to me.
