Big Ten Conference Divisions

On College Football Live today:

Kirk Herbstreit - "I think this is a no-brainer, you have to keep Ohio State and Michigan within the same division. And it's not gonna lose any meaning. Look at Alabama and Auburn: now, for years in the SEC, it's the last game of the year, it's probably as big a deal today as it's ever been in The Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn. You keep Ohio State and Michigan within the same division ... you don't separate 'em or move the Ohio State-Michigan game back to mid-October. It's the craziest thing I've ever heard of. They play within the same division, you play it at the end of the year, whoever wins that game, historically will continue to win on, move on to win the Big Ten Championship. So I don't wanna hear any more about separating them and moving an Ohio State-Michigan game to mid-October. It's crazy."

Robert Smith expressed similar views, and said he was 'inconsolable' about being 0-2 against TSUN. He felt strongly that there should only be one matchup each year. Lou Holtz said The Game should be in the same division, the last game of the regular season.

Brian Griese thought separate divisions and moving the game to the beginning of November was a good idea, since same divisions would mean that The Game wouldn't determine the Rose Bowl. He also liked the opportunity of a rematch.

to me this is apples an oranges. Cooper lost to Michigan but he brought some good teams into The Game. Coop never went back to back seasons only winning 1 big ten game. Cooper lived up to his end of the deal by fielding a competitive team...they just happened to get beat. Rich Rod is not fielding a competitive team.
Thank god someone smacked him down for saying something so stupid.

John Cooper's win percentage while at Ohio State: 71.5%
Twice Michigan was Coops only loss.

Dick Rod's win percentage while at Michigan so far: 33.3%
Michigan has won a total of three conference games under Dicky.

There are many bad things you can say about Coop's reign at Ohio State, but don't dissrespect the man by lumping him in with Dicky sad-face Rodriguez. Michigan ripped our hearts out during the 90's it's not our fault if you chose not to enjoy it. Bet your ass I'm smiling after every win and laughing my ass off when cameras pans over Michigan fans crying as the last seconds tick away. You're team sucks, I don't give a shit I still want to beat you more than any other team.

Everyone can agree on:

  • A conference championship game diminishes The Game, to a degree
  • Despite that, a conference championship game IS happening, done deal.
  • Given the above 2, the absolute best scenario is for The Game to remain as the final regular season game on Thanksgiving weekend.
  • Despite that, it MAY get moved (unknown at this point)
  • I may be in the minority, but I don't agree with this. Playing in the same division is more important than playing in the final game. The two aren't completely separable, because if OSU and UM are in the same division they will play in the final game, but being in the same division is the more important element. This is because whether they're in the same or opposite divisions fundamentally alters the stakes of The Game.

Is everybody hearing the same things that I am?

Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State, Illinois, and Michigan in a division.

Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern and Wisconsin in the other.

Michigan and OSU will meet in late October.

Well.....it was great while it lasted if this is how it turns up.

From your perspective how does putting Ohio State and Michigan in separate divisions make the Big Ten more competitive?

IMO (with my conspiracy hat on), the other thing besides money that is driving this split is JoePa. He knows that Ohio State and Michigan are the true driving forces in the conference and he wants to make sure State Penn gets paired with one of them. I have no info to back that theory up but if it is found State Penn is the driving force between diving college football's two biggest rivals BN27 better buy himself a fleet of trailers because there will be a ton of Buckeye fans jumping on the "I hate absolutely everything about Penn State" bandwagon.

There is a lot of truth here as JoPa wanted to create a OSU/PSU rivalry and wants to preserve what there is of it at this point. The man still has a lot of power. This may have worked against him though as we seem to be stealing top players from under him with regularity, now.

If the Big Ten bends over for some fucking 80+ year old coach. For Penn State Joe Pa is a big deal and they owe him a lot. The Big Ten owes him nothing. Hell I don't mean to be callous but whats the chances he's even alive in November of 2011? Or at the very least in any condition to coach football?
