Big Ten Conference Divisions

Both stadiums hold over 100,000 seats.

I don't think 1,000 - 5,000 e-mails (and there probably won't be 5,000) make a difference to people who only look at balance sheets. That's not even 10 percent of the stadium.

The threat of a lawsuit or loss of money seems to be the only way to get through to Ohio State or the Big Ten. That's why I'll continue to say Gene Smith, Gordon Gee and Delany will just ignore public reaction currently and believe people will just move on and adjust.

A sustained effort to hit OSU and the Big Ten financially would seem to be a stronger approach, not bad press. This is a conference that has dealt with bad press since maybe 2006.

Don't forget the importance of the Big Ten Network, it's carriers and it's sponsors.

That's where the money is coming from and that's the bottom line you want to stop funding.

Mark Silverman, the head of which ever cable/satellite company you have the network through and the big dollars sponsors you see during the commercial breaks are the powers that need to be targeted.

Downgraded by fans, maybe. But I don't think for a second that OSU players and coaches will not be up for the Michigan game whenever it's played. I wish the game will continue to be the last game of the season. If it's not, this fan will still take a win over Michigan even it was our only win of the season. Moving the game will not downgrade my hate for everything dealing with the University of Michigan.

I'm sure older fans will always feel that way...but 18-21 year old kids going to OSU to try and win National Titles won't see a game against a 5-7 team (well, 3-3 at the time) in early October as anything special. Especially if the next coach is more like Cooper than Tressel. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen eventually if it is moved.

Gene Smith's response on OhioStateBuckeyes.com around (or after) Noon.

Do not believe a word he, President Gee or Jim Delany says on the entire situation. This is politicking and playing both sides. This is a mere PR campaign.

If they say your hair is on fire, check in a mirror.

Talking Points (probably for both Gee and Smith)
1) Decision has not been made.
2) We are looking at every possible scenario still.
3) We are hearing your voices, reading your e-mails and care about your opinions (and are taking them in consideration).
4) The Ohio State-Michigan game will be big no matter when it is played.
5) Television has not been discussed yet and has not been factored in.

Benefit of the doubt?

"This is a one-time thing." - Gene Smith (on the Nike Pro Combat uniforms, Nov. 2009)
Andy Geiger's legacy: The Schott, expanding Ohio Stadium, the Jesse Owens facility (yes, I had to throw that one in there), Jim Tressel, Thad Matta. By most accounts that's a successful legacy.

Gene Smith's legacy: Conference allignment. He gets to decide if his legacy will be viewed as a success or a failure.

Not arguing to move it, but what you say will happen eventually even if it ISN'T moved, if Michigan continues being that 5-7 team. I wouldn't want it moved if it was my team, and I'm not advocating moving it. But the "big deal" about it is more due to both teams being up and playing for the conference championship, the Rose Bowl, a NC shot, etc. Take that away because one team fades and doesn't come back - that 5-7 team you speak of - and those 18-21 year old kids you speak of won't see it as anything special even at the end of November.

The administration will just look down and say "Did they pay to get in? O.K." and move on watching the game.

Ohio Stadium with 15,000 would send a stronger message.

If you use Manchester United right now as the template. People hate the Glazers and want them out. Green and Gold Campaign. Huge number of Green and Gold scarves all around.

Glazers still own the team because people are still going to games (even though season tickets are down) and they are asking too much for the sale of the team.

Well the fact that they haven't officially released a decision yet makes boycotting a bit premature, aside from the fact that they'd never pull it off and the tickets are already sold anyway lol

The facebook event could use a little bit more of an explanation though for people that aren't following this sort of stuff

You're right.

Celtics/Lakers & Colts/Patriots are pretty weak rivalries.

Colts/Patriots: not even a rivalry, let alone a weak one.

Celtics/Lakers: Nobody has ever given a damn about regular season games between those two. I don't think anybody is arguing that an Ohio State/M*ch*g*n CCG matchup wouldn't be a big deal. Rather, people are upset because the traditional regular season matchup would have all the significance of a regular season NBA game.

Not trying to derail the Nebraska-TSUN historical comparison, but this is a very active thread right now, and that's really a topic that's secondary to the divisional alignment discussion and the timing of The Game.

I split that out, so that discussion can continue here:

Thanks, BB - sorry for my part in derailing this one. :)

No problem, it happened in a normal flow. Since it's continued for a while, and since this thread is currently a hot topic, it seemed best to separate them.

Smith says OSU-Michigan game yet to be decided

After being inundated with emails opposed to the possibility of moving the Ohio State-Michigan football game from the final week of the regular season, Buckeyes athletics director Gene Smith today said that no decision about the future of the game has been made.

In a video released on ohiostatebuckeyes.com, Smith said the Big Ten discussions related to integrating Nebraska have centered so far on divisional alignment and the logistics of adding a ninth conference game.

"No decision has been made, and frankly we've had very little discussion on schedules - when or where teams would play," Smith said.

Smith, Michigan AD Dave Brandon and OSU president E. Gordon Gee have recently said they are open-minded to moving the game from its traditional final-game spot on the schedule.

Smith told the Dispatch last week that he had gotten few emails on the topic. Since then, he said, his email folder has been "blowing up." He said that more than 90 percent are opposed to moving the game.

"The feedback I've received thus far has been unbelievably beneficial," Smith said.

Smith said league officials and ADs will have a conference call next week and another discussion after that to talk about scheduling.

"Every consideration will be on the table," Smith said.
He said it would be inappropriate to discuss publicly his opinion or that of Ohio State's.

"Please understand we're going to do our due diligence and what's best for our institutions and first and foremost what's best for the kids," Smith said, "and make sure we protect all our traditions and come up with a structure that will last over time."

How is a potential OSU-UM split driven by money? Who stands to make more money by splitting them?

Obviously, the powers that be think that they must have a Championship game and they're willing to sacrifice some of the prestige The Game has to fund the entire league.(how much prestige does The Game have left when scUM loses to Toledo?) Or just stay ahead of the curve of changing college football. They are forward thinking rather than backward thinking. I have no idea if they are headed in the right direction.
