Big Ten Conference Divisions

Remember that in a few years because I guarantee it's not going to happen.

There is not going to be the build up for a mid season cross divisional game that comes anywhere close to the type of hype that has surrounded The Game in the past.

I was kidding, hence the second part. :wink2:

Surprisingly when I left a message saying I was going to stop my annual donation to the Buckeye Club, I got a phone call right away. :tongue2:

WBNS-FM had a point. Ohio State could be the only school to probably not get its rival on the final weekend.

If you're having a rivalry weekend on the final weekend, you don't have the one rivalry the Big Ten is known for?

The b10 can't manufacture or enhance greatness with alignments.

They can and are stripping the bad osu/um teams of their last bullet, ruining the other's season.

Sorry, but I'll strongly disagree with that. Again, as a Husker fan of multiple decades, I won't claim to be any more unbiased in this than any of y are. But I'd say that Nebraska's arrival on the scene - looking at both current state and historical records over the last several decades - definitely means that UM is no longer a given as the "1B potential to always be a national power house" within the Big Ten.
I would strongly agree with that, but michigan is being replaced with a 4th or 5th place team in psu as the roadblock.

There are myriad reasons why splitting tOSU-Michigan is horrible. I can't think of a single horrible reason for keeping them in the same division. One game, all the marbles (when it gets to that point again). End of story.

except it's not all of the marbles anymore even if we are in the same division due to the championship game

Fine, one game for half the marbles. It's better than one game of little consequence.

I think it's pretty misleading to group those rivalries together and state the overarching conclusions you're getting from them. My comments in red on a game by game basis...

No one is arguing that keeping the game at the same time might diminish the rivalry (aside from the fact that a CCG might do that). Everyone pretty much knows that status quo couldn't hurt, which is all that I think your comments here help support. The question is whether an alternative could be just as good or better. The only example I see that is a good possible case study is the Miami/FSU one.

What's misleading? I grouped several well-known rivalries in 2 groups - those in the same division and those that aren't.

I also stated an opinion that the 2 rivalries that stayed in the same division (WLOCP and Iron Bowl) have continued to be very important, and that the rivalry that was moved into being a divisional game (Red River Shootout) has thrived since then. And calling that game 'status quo' is way off the mark, I believe; it has grown hugely in terms of national importance over the past 15 years.

And I said that each of the rivalries among teams that moved into separate divisions of a conference have all suffered. The causes for this can be debated, scheduling was certainly a factor for Okla-Neb, but I believe the cross-divisional scenario, along with the movement of the game's schedule (Miami-FSU) have also hurt those rivalries.

I don't want either scenario (separate divisions, changing the traditional schedule) to diminish The Game.

Going forward from 2011, there is no 'status quo' for The Game. It will either occur in the same or separate divisions, and it will either occur just before the CCG or it will be moved up.

The CCG in itself will somewhat diminish The Game. But I believe that separate divisions and moving when the game is played will both diminish it more than placing the teams in the same division and leaving it as the last scheduled game.

It sure does look the decision has been made for a while. The timing of the comments from Smith, Brandon, and Gee have been planned to slowly let the pissed off fans accept it. It even started back at the Big Ten Media days with comments by coaches.

The tOSU folks are all being good 'league players' and saying that it's OK with them. I really wonder how strongly they argued against it when the meaningful discussions were held.

It's still for all the marbles in my opinion. Now the marbles are the CCG.

I agree, but it looks like the writing is on the wall for Ohio State and Michigan in separate divisions. I just hope that when future expansion occurs the divisions are revisited, or that the powers that be will revisit the topic in a few years when they realize how badly they have screwed up their product.

And who knows, maybe we will be in the same division, maybe being in separate divisions will turn out to be not so bad, I guess we will find out, I just hope that in the likely case that things do suck, the morons in charge aren't too stubborn to change them.

I just want everyone that is equating Michigan being bad to them being put in a different division and moved earlier in the season to picture this. Michigan is good again Ohio State is still good Michigan beats Ohio State early in the season and goes on to lose to Nebraska, one loss Ohio State goes to happy valley to face undefeated Penn State. Ohio State beats Penn State in a great game, Buckeyes that made the trip rush the field celebrating the win and the upcoming match-up with Nebraska.

I'm just assuming something, but if I had to guess, I think the next (planned) leak will come from the Penn State AD or Joe Paterno (most likely the AD).

It won't be in regards to the OSU-Michigan game, but the statement will talk about divisions.

I mean, since the decision(s) are already made in regards to divisions, just release it. It would honestly be better to release it now rather than after games have started if you want to garner/maintain the spotlight. It's not like you're going to surprise people now.
