I read that the other day. I really believe if the Big 12 wouldn't have put the squeeze on Nebraska and Mizzou to re affirm their committment to the Big 10 and we probably would still be in the Big 12 next year. Funny how things work.

1. I agree. Apparently the Big10 was in no hurry to make any move this soon; however, Nebraska was afraid that Texas & friends would leave the conference, the Big XII would disolve, and they would be hung out to dry.

2. I found this interesting: "They discussed a meeting Osborne had had that morning with NU's coaches. Telling them the conference discussions were getting serious, Osborne polled them on where they thought Nebraska should cast its lot. Every coach voted Big Ten."

Either they saw the writing on the wall (and willingly went along) or they really didn't like/trust the Big XII.

3. Here is the real letter that the Nebraska president sent....They left off the smiley on the website.

Dear Colleagues:

I am sorry that the timing of events did not provide an adequate opportunity to give you advance notice of Nebraska's decision. This is a very bittersweet moment for me personally as well as for my University. I have counted all of you as friends as well as professional colleagues. I don't think we could have had the conversations we have had without that being true.

I know there are many individuals who feel considerable sorrow in giving up the traditions and interactions we have had in athletics, with some of you for many decades. As a Nebraskan who has grown up with these traditions, I share that sorrow, perhaps more than most realize. Nonetheless, I would be less than honest not to admit that I am excited about the opportunities that the Big 10 offers Nebraska.

In the end I had to make the decision based on my judgment of what was best for my institution. I continue to have great respect for the institutions of the Big 12 and for each of you and notwithstanding the media's perspective, we did not make this decision because of any bad feelings or concerns about any of you or your institutions. I was concerned about the long-term stability of the Big 12 and with an option that was unlikely to present itself again, I felt I had no choice but to take it.

As things sort themselves out, I will play whatever role you choose is appropriate and participate only to the extent you want me to during the coming year in matters relating to the Big 12.

A good read on Nebraska's decision to join the Big Ten.

Omaha.com
Wow, GREAT article. Really tells the back-story to the Big Ten expansion story this summer, coming directly from two of the three folks involved in the negotiations.

Makes you think: I bet when we were hearing "Big Ten offers Missouri, Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Rutgers to join the conference", I bet those were four of the teams that made it past the initial round of "cuts".

Yeah, read the article last week.

What I found most interesting about the article was how secretive the meeting was. Seriously... fly separate, drive an hour into the boonies. I can see it being held in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere.

That then begs the question... how many more meetings like this happenend?

Can you say, "Big Ten Hockey Conference"?

Penn State to play Division I hockey

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Major college hockey is coming to Penn State.
Ending years of rumors and speculation, university leaders at a trustees meeting formally announced Friday the establishment of Division I men's and women's ice hockey programs to begin play in the 2012-13 season.
Happy Valley hockey fans can thank Terry and Kim Pegula after the couple donated $88 million -- the largest private gift in Penn State history -- to finance a new multipurpose arena to be built near the Jordan Center and help establish the men's program.

Big Ten official statement:

http://www.bigten.org/genrel/091710aaa.html

Sept. 17, 2010

The Big Ten Conference released the following statement today regarding Penn State’s plans to establish NCAA Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.

The Big Ten Conference is excited about Penn State’s recent announcement regarding the establishment of NCAA Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs set to begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. Our institutions have longstanding relationships with Division I, Division II, and Division III college hockey programs that have benefitted both our institutions and the entire national hockey community.

For many years, we have had five institutions sponsoring Division I men’s ice hockey programs – Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Wisconsin. Big Ten rules allow for a championship whenever there are six institutions sponsoring a program in any given sport. This leads to the presumption that there will be a Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Championship at some point in the future. A decision of that nature, however, cannot be made without a significant amount of discussion both internally with conference chancellors, presidents, administrators and coaches, and externally with the hockey community as a whole. Whatever we do, we will communicate in a respectful and responsible way as we endeavor to balance all of the unique interests in play.

We congratulate Penn State and wish them well as they continue to provide the most broad-based opportunities possible for their student-athletes

I didn't see that thread, but I figure it goes here too since people have speculated that this is another way to put the squeeze on Notre Dame to get them to join the Big Ten in all sports.

Yep - that's why I didn't move the posts. It's worth noting here, but any in-depth discussion about hockey should be in the other thread.

Stumbled on this at a VT board...

As a long time, avid, UT fan, our one and only hope is to change conferences. There is little or no interst in the Big East, the ACC's academic credentials preclude us, so our one and only hope is the Big Ten. The Big Ten has publicly proclaimed that the changing demographics-population growth in the South-makes them look south toward future expansion of their conference. Contact, conversations, have evolved between most influential UT folks and the Big Ten but they want Ky to come with UT. Ky, because of it's long and great history of bb domination in the SEC, is most reluctant. UT's only hope for footbal sucdcess is to exit the SEC but the Big Ten's demands that Ky come with us is holding up most serious consideration. They want Florida, but Florida has NO interest!

FYI tennstud = Roy Adams, the Vols booster who was part of the Albert Means story.

It ain't gonna happen but it's still funny reading (especially the portion I snipped out and the following SEC vs Boise St insanity).

That is crazy. I don't know what makes him think that the ACC would reject UT's academics, but the Big Ten wouldn't.
