Apparently Utah State was also asked to join the MWC but declined the offer. Man, they should be kicking themselves and firing whoever was responsible for that decision.

Allegedly they were also the ones who instigated the WAC's move to entice BYU as a non-football member.

The WAC also tried to get SDSU & UNLV to jump over and it's claimed that BYU was behind the $5M buyout that was instituted recently to keep things together for their non-revenue sports.

Meanwhile the Fresno & Nevada (and Utah St) offers were meant to blow up the WAC so BYU wouldn't have the safe haven and multiple offers were given to help ensure enough teams would jump which should preclude their having to pay the $5 Million buyout...which they just agreed to LAST WEEK.

Finally Nevada never signed the agreement but the WAC's attorneys feel they're still on the hook due to a (once again..alleged) verbal agreement.

Talk about some back stabbing mofos!

Utah should send Urban some $$$ for his raising them to a potential PAC-10 conference quality program.

Even though Urban left, Utah played the undefeated season, #1 NFL draft pick, and their first BCS win into continued good recruiting - and the successor coach kept the same system and continued Urban's success in the following years. I have to think that absent Urban's stint, Utah would not have received a Pac-10 invite. Good for them.

Actually, they should send the Salt Lake Organizing Committee some $$$ (I hear they're not above accepting) for the sweet Olympic facilities their university enjoys.

Looks like tOSU will be hosting a team that's still in the Big XII in 2011.

Colorado to stay in Big 12 through 2012

Colorado isn?t leaving the Big 12 anytime soon.

According to sources, the Buffaloes are expected to remain in the conference through 2012, and then join the Pac-10.

Buffaloes athletic director Mike Bohn told the Boulder Daily Camera on Tuesday, ?That is our plan and that is what we?re working on.?

That would mean 11 teams in the Big 12 for 2011-12, which would raise questions about scheduling and championships.

Assuming the league goes to an 11-team (non-division) standing for football and there is no championship game, it?s likely the Big 12 would go ahead with plans for a nine-game conference schedule.

...

Colorado is remaining in the Big 12 for financial reasons, the source said.
The school and Big 12 haven?t reached an agreement on the conference-generated revenue that would be withheld from the school as a penalty for leaving the conference.

Under league bylaws, 50 percent of the Buffaloes? income will be withheld if it leaves after 2012. If Colorado had left for the Pac-10 after this school year, the figure would have been 80 percent.

Using figures from 2007-09, the Buffs would stand to lose $9-$14 million in income generated from television contracts, bowl games and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Cont'd ...

I don't think they will play tOSU if they stay in the Big 12. The reason they were looking for this game is because they had Cal on the schedule and since they were going to be in the same conference, this would be a conference game so they were looking for a big payday game. Now if they don't join the Pac right away, their non con is full with the Cal Bears.

The agreement to play in 2011 was just announced Tuesday, including comments from CU's AD, who had to know they were also about to announce staying in the Big XII. CU's getting $1.4 million to come to the 'Shoe. The reason they're staying in the Big XII is also for money - they don't want to pay the huge 'leaving early' penalty that would be due if they left in July 2011.

The ESPN ticker had Andy Katz reporting that BYU will leave the Mtn West Conference in 2011, and will play football as an independent in 2011, and join the West Coast Conference in basketball and other sports in 2011-12.

. . . and then hope to be in a position to jump to the Big 12 at some point without having to pay a conference buy out? Would they have had to in the new MWC or something? Interesting.

It sounds like it's a done deal. It's being reported from multiple sources now.

I don't understand the basis for their move. I felt like the MWC made some major steps toward becoming the 4th AQ conference in the hypothetical 4 "mega-conference" future. Or even so without that, BYU seems to be making a lateral if not backwards move by going independent, at least in football terms.

I am so excited for BYU to be leaving the Mountain West! Good riddance. I loathe the Cougars' false-pride and arrogance and have nothing but disdain for what comes out of Provo.
