If I understand, SDSU notified MWC that they intended to depart, asked about the possibility of an extension, clarified that they had not given notice yet, and then notified that they would be staying. If that is correct, and there are no other written or recorded audio conversations, they might have a good chance of winning any legal case. They did not give formal notice that they were leaving after all. Even if that is true, someone eventually needs to be fired.

If you read the letter they sent the MWC, it's pretty obvious that they were out the door and just wrangling to get the lower exit fee, which apparently jumped up on July 1. In any event, this is the second time they've pulled this crap (they were headed to the Big East for a cup of coffee), so I'm fully on board with the MWC turning the screws on them.

Northwestern and SDSU really trying to (potentially) out-stupid each other?

I am just happy it isn't tOSU this time around.
I'm thinking that SDSU is probably more stupid than NW. NW just needs to buy out a contract or two and move on, and they have lots of money to do that with. SDSU is looking at having to pay 17 million dollars for exiting the conference they were in so that they can reapply to rejoin the same conference. And in theory, they could be turned down and wind up homeless. That has to be a new record for stupid.

Just sayin': Yeah, SDSU is stupid; however, here's a scenario where the MW's hard line approach to SDSU could backfire on them:

The pros and cons of the Mountain West drawing a hardline on SDSU's potential exit from league

* Finances: The MW's more aggressive approach could cost the conference $17 million, which is a lot of money. Let's say the MW accepts SDSU's interpretation of its original letter and lets the Aztecs stay in the league. And then SDSU gets a invitation from the Pac-12 within the next couple of months, which I ultimately believe will happen. If SDSU wanted out of the MW then, it'd owe the conference $34 million rather than $17 million, per the conference bylaws, if it were to join the Pac-12 in 2024-25. Slow playing this could have paid financial dividends, and there's likely to be some legal fees in the near future.

Ultimately, I would not have taken SDSU's initial letter as proof of resignation, if only because this could financially cost the MW in the long run while ending any hope of retaining a great athletic department. The MW could have potentially cashed in a $34 million exit fee rather than a $17 million exit fee or kept the Aztecs through the 2024-25 season, with that school hopefully racking up more NCAA Tournament units that would stay with the MW.

SDSU has to agree in writing that their previous letter is null and void and they won't attempt to use it to get the lower exit fee if they do leave. MWC probably got the best deal that they could. That's some inept leadership at SDSU.

Minnesota now joins a growing list of Big Ten programs embroiled in controversy over the past few seasons. Iowa settled a racial discrimination lawsuit brought against the program in March; Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is facing a four-game suspension to begin the 2023 season for allegedly lying to NCAA investigators; and Northwestern is currently dealing with the fallout from the hazing scandal that's rocked the university and led to the firing of longtime coach Pat Fitzgerald.

B1G! B1G! B1G!

So with Colorado leaving what's left of the Pac-12....what happens now?

No real candidates for expansion.

One school that made geographic sense (SDSU) bailed already.

Keeping what's left is going to be increasingly harder I think, especially if the Big Ten comes in to pick the bones.

Never would have dreamed the Big 12 would become more relevant than the PAC (mind boggling--and are they really relevant at all?) but looks like CO is going "home" with a strong chance AZ will follow. PAC still doesn't even have a tv deal LOL. Of course....this would be the year some dark horse comes out of the PAC and makes the playoffs!

It seems like conference realignment between conferences not named the B1G or SEC is being driven primarily by media rights deals. So I wonder, does ESPN have a financial interest in pushing schools out of the PAC-12 and into the Big-12? I can't think of one, but that might explain their foot-dragging on the PAC-12 media deal.
