Allen [executive director] said they're still trying to figure out what to call the University of Chicago, since it is not a member of the athletic conference, but the change won't impact their role in the alliance.

"They'll continue to be a partner institution, and we're working on what we'll call that," Allen said. "The relationship will continue to be very strong, they'll just have a different name."

Bob Bowlsby to begin contacting schools to gauge interest in Big 12

The Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday that it has authorized commissioner Bob Bowlsby to begin exploring expansion candidates.

The Big 12 board of directors met in Irving and deliberated on the merits of expansion, hearing presentations from two paid consultants on the issue.

Bowlsby is expected to begin contacting schools to gauge their interest in the Big 12 in the coming days.

"It's a forward step, a positive step," said Oklahoma president and board chair David Boren, who has been the most outspoken proponent for Big 12 expansion. "Not yet a decision ... but it shows momentum on the board to consider [expansion] as a possibility."

Boren said expansion by both two and four schools will be on the table moving forward.

Houston and BYU is my guess as the two most likely expansion teams.

Houston AD met with Pac-12 commissioner on West Coast trip
Jul 18, 2016

University of Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek met last month with Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott while on a trip to the West Coast as the school tries to attract interest from Power Five conferences.

Pac-12 spokesman Erik Hardenbergh confirmed Monday that Scott met with Yurachek at the athletic director's request. Houston spokesman David Bassity said Yurachek used the meeting to discuss myriad topics related to the future of college athletics.

The Pac-12 has given no indication it is looking to expand from its current 12 members.

Houston is a member of the American Athletic Conference and one of many schools outside Power Five leagues that have been working behind the scenes to move to a more lucrative conference.

Cont'd ...

Who would be 14 if PAC added UH? It'd slightly weaken the proposition of adding Texas and her 3 favorite whipping boys ... but adding UH would seriously undermine the little10.
They've got all their eggs in Texas with 2 stable P5 conferences establishing a beachhead ... would OU finally call it and jump ship (feels inevitable but waiting for a watershed moment to trigger it)

But with extra money, visibility and prestige [from the Big 12], there’s reason to think Cincinnati could start beating other Big Ten programs, like Michigan State, Nebraska, Wisconsin or Minnesota, for players in Ohio. It could also potentially give other Big 12 programs, like Iowa State, West Virginia, or even others, an excuse to try and recruit Ohio more. Both of those scenarios have the potential to have a roundabout negative impact on Ohio State.
Not sure if serious....

The problem with the juggalos' entire fantasy is that their joining just makes the Big 12 that much less of a P5 conference and one that will implode the moment Texas decides to pack up and leave. Perhaps, UT will decide that keeping their LHN is worth staying in the B12 and propping it up, but I don't think so. They're the strongest voice against expansion now, and this would be just one more argument pushing them out the door. The expanded B12 still can't have a viable network because of the LHN, but conversely, they can't have a viable network if Texas leaves. Also, how much money does either FOX or ESPN have for an expanded and diluted B12 deal after each of them just committed $1.5B to get Big Ten rights? And how much are they willing to commit to a B12 that becomes worthless the moment UT and/or OU hit the door.

As for the B12 getting a footprint in Ohio, that's pure fantasy. Even during the jugggalos Kelly era glory, they had ZERO following outside the tri-county area, and even within it, their following is a mile wide and an inch deep, meaning that it dries up and disappears with the first four or five loss season. And even in the good times, the best that UC can hope to do is win a plurality of eyeballs in that corner of the state with Ohio State, Kentucky and Notre Dame. REgular games against WVU and Iowa State won't change that a bit. Having UT and OU come to Juggalo Field once every 6 years won't change that either.

Then there's the matter of finances. Under the Grifter, UC has run one of the most irresponsible athletic departments in the country. Last year's subsidy was over $27M, one of the very highest in the country. Where is the money going to come from to step up their program, and it won't be coming from a watered down share of money from a conference that can't have a network.

I think that in order to make anything viable, they cannot take Houston unless they go to 16. They have to expand their geographic footprint, and that probably means taking UC and Memphis, possibly with BYU, Truck Driver U and Colorado State or one of the crappy New Mexico schools. Their choices really suck - Oklahoma has options, and if I were them, I would be embarrassed to be in that league right now.

Pic Below is Nippert a week back when FC Cincinnati (a tier below the MLS) played a friendly against Crystal Palace (a premier league squad).
We got a sitter and my wife and I grabbed dinner and drinks before the game and had a great time. The game was sold out and 36k people packed Nippert Stadium. It was a ton of fun for a 2nd tier soccer match.

Having said that, the rumbles amongst the patrons leaving the game said that this will probably be a better crowd than UC draws all year.
They host Houston (Week 3) and BYU at home and I'm thinking that's the only chance they have of topping this crowd.

36k is a sellout? And the football team won't draw as much? That screams P5 conference.

Edit: Did some research and found that their largest crowd in the last two years was 39,095 against FCS Alabama A&M last year. BYU's smallest home crowd was 56,015 against some school named Wagner. Houston's home attendance last year was almost as shitty as Cincinnati's.
