Syracuse is almost 250 miles from NYC. Not exactly "in the market".

True, but from a media perspective and alumni base, I think they would become even more dominant as "New York City's college team."Keep in mind that NYC is always going to be first and foremost a pro sports city. I don't ever see New York becoming another Chicago with college flags hanging outside the multiple "alumni bars" all over the North Side.
Syracuse is in a "battle" with Rutgers over the title of NYC's college team. They are positioning themselves closer than 250 miles through their marketing.

Thanks for the explanation on "the CIC's standard", which obviously is as important as any football considerations.

Besides Texas and Missouri, the other Big 12 schools in the AAU are Iowa State, Kansas, and Nebraska. Why would those schools be unacceptable to the CIC? Nebraska would be especially attractive as a football school.

In terms of expansion, everyone has been talking about adding one school, but why not add three? For example:

Big Ten East
1. Ohio State
2. Michigan
3. Michigan State
4. Penn State
5. Pittsburgh
6. Indiana
7. Purdue

Big Ten West
1. Illinois
2. Northwestern
3. Wisconsin
4. Minnesota
5. Iowa
6. Missouri
7. Nebraska

The balance of power is still probably in the East, but Nebraska and Missouri would really help to solidify the West.

Probably? In the West I see Nebraska and I don't see anything else that comprises a potential Top Ten year-in-year-out program.

A blog I enjoyed reading:

Missouri to the Big 10+2
That is a truly well written blog - great find and an even better read.

On the current proposal (14 vs. 12) I vote 12, being persuaded by Zurp's argument concerning the number of seasons needed to cycle through the teams in the opposing division.

(Though how this knits and fits with my earlier discussion, in another thread, concerning the Big East and Penn State / ND is another matter entirely).

Lucas Oil is a top-tier stadium and would most definitely get the nod over Soldier Field.

Two words: Arena Ball

Jeeez, just this Saturday I watched Montana and Appy State play before a full house in Bozeman in the snow. Appy State and Montana. Not exactly tier 1.

If the only reason for a bowl game is a vacation in some bimbo infested sun spot then why put your team, your conference, rep on the line?

If the bucks were playing Oregon or Florida in Ann Arbor or Columbus or Soldier Field you can bet they would have no problem getting their fan base there.

I think the hangup is whether the SEC & P10 fans would travel as well as the b10 fans.

ummmm the original statement wasn't in reference to a bowl game....methinks you missed what he said, completely.

How about this:
Big Ten North
Michigan
Michigan State
Penn State
Wiscy
Minny
NW

Big Ten South
Ohio State
Texas: ooc schedule of a&m (would need to be moved to beginning of year), Oklahoma and 2 mid majors at home
IU
Illinois
Pudue
Iowa

To take this one step further and combine it with LJB's

Big Ten East
Michigan
Michigan State
Penn State
Rutgers/Syracuse
Ohio State
Purdue
Indiana

Big Ten West
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Texas: ooc schedule of a&m (would need to be moved to beginning of year), Oklahoma and 2 mid majors at home
Missouri/Nebraska
Illinois
Iowa
Northwestern

Welcome MissouriFan,

Thanks for the info on Mizzou. No one is saying that they're not worthy for Big Ten membership. I think they, along with Texas, are the only two B12 schools that are.

If memory serves me correctly Mizzou and Nebraska have two of the finest J-schools in the US and if they are connected to Wash U, especially Wash U Med, then they have connections that would come close to the Big 10's connections to U Chicago.

Bama fans would, Tennessee fans would, Frankly, I could give a shit. Give OSU their 20K tickets and see how fast they fill the place.

It's all about equity. I refuse to believe that Big 10 teams receive the same opportunity as SEC and Pac 10 teams when all their bowl games are out of their region.

Not bad, especially if Texas is the 12th team (not likely, but clearly the best option if it can be made to happen). It still works pretty well if Missouri is the 12th team.

Locked in Rivalry Week Games before the B10 Championship Game
Ohio State-Michigan (if there's a rematch next week so be it.)
Penn State-Michigan State
Wiscy-Minny
Illinois-Northwestern
IU-Purdue
Texas-Iowa
You'd probably have to do something like that in order to preserve The Game. However, in order to allow for the proper rotation against teams in the other division (see Zurp's post, above), you'd probably have to put all of the rivals in separate divisions, or in the same division.

For example, Ohio State's rival is Michigan. Ohio State is in the South, Michigan is in the North. Every year, one of Ohio State's three non-division games will be Michigan, which means that Ohio State will cycle through the other five North Division teams in a home-away series every five years.

Indiana's rival is Purdue. Both teams are in the South Division. Thus, Indiana and Purdue will cycle through the North Division teams in a home-away series every four years.

Maybe it's no big deal, but it would affect scheduling.

Attempt to have one weekend in late September/early October when the four traditional B10 powers all play a major OOC game with national implications and that focuses the nation's attention on The Big Ten.

I would love something like this. Actually, in the past I suggested a Big 10-SEC Challenge, which would be similar to Big 10-ACC Challenge in basketball. To make things fair, games would be scheduled in week 2 in one year, and in week 11 (right before rivalry games) in the next year. That way, we'd have southern schools playing in northern climates in alternating years, which would even the playing field a bit.

Absolutely my dream scenario. Toronto is my number 2 and Mizzouri number 3. I was shown the light as to why I can lump Nebraska in with Pitt, Cinci, etc as schools I don't want to see. Texas is a pipe dream... but I want to dream!

I just have to take that GaWC to task over that world city map. No offense to Chicago but I would much rather live in Buenos Aires. In fact, what year is your map? This is 2008. This map is more along how I think of world cities and Chicago. But lets be clear, the city is a world class city, I am not trying to denigrate it. However this map seems to be more in line with world markets today and what I have seen on my travels.
