Well, it's official - according to ESPN Radio's John Kincaid, Nebraska "cut and ran" because they couldn't compete with Texas and Oklahoma in the Big XII, and their style of play will fit in better in the "plodding Big Ten". Thanks ESPN for reducing a very complex situation down to the sound bite stereotyope that you've been spewing for years.

Gee, I'm going to dump any funds that have FEDEX holdings. I can't think of a more wasteful use of a publicly traded company's funds than this. I'd love to see some serious (i.e. institutional investor) lawsuits against management if they tried to use company money for this.

What makes you think this would be wasteful? I have no sense for what kinds of returns could be expected for different marketing campaigns so I'm just curious.

The way he's going about choosing which conference to advertise through seems a little suspect.

Wasteful or not it certainly represents a significant step towards further commercialization.

This is not a company agreeing to sponsor a game, but to sponsor a university. It is the difference between the FedEx Orange Bowl and the FedEx Memphis Tigers. It is a step towards the Microsoft Buckeyes.

Oh yes they will.

Screen capture of the latest ESPN SportsNation poll (for posterity, since it'll disappear forever sometime soon): Which new Big 10 rivalry does the nation want to see?

Clean sweep of the farm states with a smattering of some in the northeast for Neb/Iowa.

Rest of the nation (and the world) says Neb/Ohio State.

Lone hold outs are Michigan and Penn State, who both think they're relevant in this discussion.

If the big 12 wanted to survive why wouldnt they throw everything out start from scratch ask free shoe u and da u to joint and then they would have the texas and Florida market....... This might be insane.... but why exactly is the Da U not an option for the big ten? They obviously have their past problems with recruiting but what a market and recruiting ground... I know they are slimy but the school is good.

So thus far ... we have movement from:

Pac-10
Big Ten
SEC
MWC
C-USA

All of them possibly picking and taking teams from:
Big-XII
ACC
Big East

Why in the WORLD is the MAC being so quiet???
Well, IIRC, there was a rumor on this board that the MAC was going to add Youngstown State, but that was supposed to happen 3 or 4 years ago. Maybe they're just being VERY deliberate about the process. :p

I think the interesting thing about this poll is that most of the world wants to see Nebraska/Ohio State.

Ohio wants to see Nebraska / Ohio State.

Nebraska wants to see Nebraska / Iowa

I think the new rivalry will be, and should be, between Nebraska and Iowa. It will be fun for us to play Nebraska, but we are not natural rivals. I also think that such a rivalry may be a great thing for Iowa: they have been a pretty powerful program over the course of the last ten years or so, and if they have a strong rivalry with Nebraska then the attention garnered may help them be seen even more so as an important and powerful team, and it may thus help them with their recruiting efforts. We shall see.

Shouldn't he of been doing this all along? It seems like the BigXII was horribly mismanaged. There was no plan to stop people from leaving except for an ultimatum. No plans to expand or do anything really for that matter. Just close our eyes and hope for the best.

A source close to the situation said A&M has an invitation from the SEC if it wants it.
:yow2:

I would love to see this happen. What an endless source of comedy it'd be.

Edited to add:

Just saw this.

Given the fact that Texas A&M may be the only Big 12 school the SEC could add, the league was prepared to make the move even if Texas and Oklahoma went elsewhere.
"We've got to be diligent in evaluating this," another SEC athletic director told ESPN.com's Schlabach. "We can't just add teams who are going to split the pie without adding anything substantial to the pie."
:slappy:

Aggie forums explode, film at 11:00.

My understanding from three sleepless nights and unproductive work days (I really need a life) is that aTm can join the SEC if they carry Oklahoma or another school with them, and only still have the possibility, but not certainty, of being able to join the SEC alone.

My dream scenario: aTm and OK join the SEC, Texas feels fine to join the Big Ten then, Notre Dame does the same, and then we add two Eastern basketball centric but well located schools, or Rutgers.
