The ONLY reason this works for Texas is if the PAC-10 is willing to treat them as more than an equal partner and will make concessions that the Big 10 will not.
I don't know, I think the Pac-10's willingness (assuming it's true) to take virtually the entire BigXII South is a pretty big carrot. Financially, the BigTen likely makes more sense, but geographically and tradition-wise, the Pac-16 makes more sense. Basically, the Pac-10 is offering UTx an improved SWC as half of the expanded Pac. I could see that offer having a lot of heft in Austin, even without any additional perks.

Big Ten Expansion: Five Reasons Texas Needs To Join

5. Nebraska Rivalry
As seen by last year's Big 12 Championship, a matchup between the Longhorns and the Cornhuskers has the potential to always be intense and entertaining.
With Texas' move to the Pac-10 and Nebraska's joining of the Big-10, such a matchup would never be possible again.
Nebraska had to come away from last season's 13-12 loss with revenge on its mind when the two matched up again. If both teams switch conferences, they'll never get the chance.
Although Oklahoma and other Texas schools are planning on joining the Pac-10, a move to the Big Ten would make the matchup between two of the most storied programs able to continue.
If both teams go their separate ways, games like last year's won't be possible again.

4. Potential Rivalry with Ohio State
Since the early 2000s, Texas and Ohio State have had a quasi-rivalry after all their encounters in out-of-conference games and bowl games.
When they met early in 2005 and 2006, the games were a chance for the out-of-conference foes to prove their credibility as a national title contender. With Vince Young at the helm in 2005, the #2 Longhorns took down the #4 Buckeyes in a 25-22 thriller. The game was an early Heisman showcasing for Vince Young.
The next year, Troy Smith took a page from Young and had a dominating performance that set him up to win the Heisman Trophy. The Buckeyes came out on top and were eventual BCS runner-ups.
And finally, 2009's Rose Bowl game was another thriller between the two teams, similar to 2005 matchup. Quann Cosby's late touchdown catch put a fitting closing to one of the most exciting bowl games of the year.
If Texas joined the Big Ten, it'd be a great chance for the two storied programs to fertilize a great rivalry. They have already proved that each game between each other can be intense.
With Oklahoma possibly moving to the Pac-10, Texas would be able to cultivate a new rival in the Buckeyes.

3. Better Chance to Compete for Titles
If the current college football system stays how it is, Texas will have a ridiculously hard time getting to a national title if they were to join the new Pac-16.
The Red-River Rivalry would continue. The game usually makes or breaks the Sooners and Longhorns' BCS Title hopes and is almost always the Longhorns' toughest challenge of the year.
On top of that, the Longhorns would have a show down with USC, Oregon and Oregon State sometime during the season.
With the Pac-10 moving to division realignment, they'd probably have to face the Trojans or Ducks in the Pac-10 title game following an already brutal conference schedule that features Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and other previous Big-12 rivals.
All in all, the schedule would offer a SEC-like gauntlet for the Longhorns. The Big 10 would offer tough matchups with Ohio State, Penn State, and Iowa, but it wouldn't be nearly the same headache as in the new Pac-10.
If the Longhorns want to continue to appear in the National Title game, joining the Big Ten would be a much better decision.

2. Conference Prestige
The USC sanctions handed down yesterday put a huge damper on the program and the rest of the Pac-10.
The Trojans have always been the conference's top selling point. Now, they're banned from two bowls and considered one of the dirtiest programs in the nation.
On top of that, Oregon is currently in hot water with players like Jeremiah Masoli and LeMichael James getting in trouble.
With all the trouble the Pac-10's two top teams are getting into, joining the conference shouldn't be too appealing to the Longhorns.
Although Michigan's recent allegations puts a little bit of a damper on the credibility of the Big Ten, there are still pretty clean programs like Ohio State and Iowa.
USC might make the rebound from all that has come about but its recent transgressions hurt the image of the conference as a whole. With all that's gone down, Texas should rethink who they want to side with as they move forward in the aftermath of the Big 12.

1. Big Ten Network
And now here comes the Big Ten's biggest selling point as they try to add teams to the conference.
The success of the Big Ten Network is arguably the reason for all the conference realignment the last couple of weeks. With all the success the network has had, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is trying to add the pieces possible to make it even better.
With Texas being one of the top programs in the nation, the amount of money they'd receive because of the Big Ten Network would be huge. On top of that, the Longhorns' program would be greatly rewarded for adding the huge Texas markets to the network's already huge number of major markets.
The relationship would be a win-win. As one of the best teams in all of the NCAA, Texas' appearances on the network would undoubtedly boost ratings and profits for the channel. On the other side, the Longhorns would gain a huge amount of money for all the exposure and games they'd play on it.
With Texas being the lynchpin of conference expansion, this should be the Big Ten's top selling point if they want to add one of the top teams in the nation.

Is it just me, or has PBC's story changed here (ala Chip Brown)? Earlier he insinuated that Texas to the Big 10 was more of a done deal and Texas and the Big 10 were in cahoots all along. If Texas is complaining about the Big 10 breaking up the Big 12, that would hardly seem to be true...

---6/11 Afternoon update: Texas and A&M are in contact with and negotiating with the Big Ten and presumably other conferences. My friend is in the middle of it, and told me that Texas is playing the "we don't want to join a conference that just broke our conference up" card. Also,

It is clear that there is internal division within Texas. Some are pretty emotional. There is anger that the Big Ten broke up their conference. Clearly others within Texas involved in the Texas push to the Big Ten.

Delaney broke the seal with Nebraska. Big Ten confident that less emothional heads will prevail, and Texas will realize the Big Ten offers the best package for Texas and college football as a whole.

Definite change of expectation that everything will shake out today. General surprise and excitement that Nebraska has gone to Big Ten.

This is awesome to watch!

That's a load of crap. After hearing Nebraska explain why they did not want to stay in the Big 12 it's obvious this was all caused by TU wanting to keep TV rights and launch their own network.

Maybe PBC is being used for posturing now?

I don't think Chip has ever changed his story he's sticking with the Pac 10 stuff come hell or high water.... PBC only said that there are those within Texas that are mad, sure there are gonna be ticked off people but if they aren't high enough up its not gonna matter, all that really matters is that Powers and Dodd are convinced this is the right move (which i believe they are), they'll take care of the rest

Could pertain to the 2011 business. Maybe they weren't ready for it that quickly?

Wrong on both accounts.
In what way is it wrong to say that it makes more geographic and tradition sense for UTx to be in a conference subdivision with a bunch of teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona, than to be in a conference of the upper midwest where their nearest partner is a couple big states away?

They are close to one state. The other 8 pac-10 schools are a long plane ride away.

Rittenberg points out the tone of the UNL BOR show:

Nebraska Officials Gush about Big Ten

AR said:
Perlman and Osborne gushed about the Big Ten at the Nebraska Board of Regents meeting Friday, as the school took another step closer to officially switching leagues. They identified Big Ten strong points such as stability (especially in relation to the Big 12), academic excellence, the Big Ten Network and tradition.
