6. B10 makes it clear that championship game will not be pursued. Instead current rotation model will continue all teams will get 13th game - this gives more BTN programming (and ad $$) but also helps to address ND's desire for 5 OOC games.

OK, I never heard of this before. Is it really an option?

That would require changes to NCAA guidelines. Only teams that schedule Hawaii can currently play 13 regular season games.

Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene

  • 14 teams make better sense numerically if they split into divisions. With 7 teams in each division, each team plays 6 inter-divisional games, allowing for an equal number of home/away inter-divisional games for everyone. With 16 teams, someone is going to get fewer divisional games at home than someone else and there would be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Unless of course a 16 team set-up had you playing less than your whole division, which would be worse.
  • My biggest fear right now is that the true power brokers are in no hurry and this drags on for weeks...months... The economy of the Midwest might not ever recover.
  • The whining over this being about money is tedious.
  • It's not really just about money. Money is the biggest criterion, but if it were the only one this would be over.

He sat down and started reviewing the hand-written notes on the card, at the top of which were written "Big 10'' and "Reasons.''

Right. Like this is real fucking hard Dr. Tom. How about this reason? There is no more Big XII to go back to.

When Delany writes about playing double-chess, that means he's playing one game of chess against Notre Dame and the Big East, and he's playing a second game of chess versus the vultures of the Pac 10 and the SEC. The Big XII was never a game of chess. They're more like a stack of Jenga blocks.

I'm surprised they'd want to play a regular season game against them only to have to turn around in a few weeks to play them again in their bowl. Rematches are never worthwhile.

Your assuming they'd make a bowl game... not a given

The Nebraska Regents are back. It looks like they have "hunter's camaflauge" chairs.....cool...

The official vote will be in "closed session".

There weer no public comments.

Crap, no there is server problems.

Apparently Regents are now going into closed session. They'll come back later and give us the goods.

OWH live blog:

In some other news: University of Texas regents will meet next week to decide whether the Longhorns will remain in the Big 12 or switch to another conference.

The regents announced Friday that they will hold a meeting by telephone Tuesday for "discussion and appropriate action regarding athletic conference membership."

Nebraska regents first opened the floor for public comments. There were none. They will now go into a closed session for discussion on conference alignment, then come back for an open session and open vote. There are eight regents, with five to pass.

Question.....

Wouldn't 4 divisions of 4 make most sense to get Texas and ND and to ensure a balanced schedule?

It lets you play your 3 divisional foes, then that division plays another....just like the NFL rotating schedule works. That's 3 games against your division and 4 against the other, so that's 7 games. That ensures balance for everyone in the division.

This also allows for 5 OOC games, which Texas and ND and others would like to ensure their rivalry games are ensured to remain intact.

If you go to two divisions of 8, that's 7 games but then you don't get the marquee matchups that you want.
