Big East BBall Tournament 2009

I'm also a bit overwhelmed by all the Big East love. Good conference for sure, but it is 16 teams. Overall, Sagarin has ACC and Big Ten ranked ahead of them. Pomeroy has them at #3 and the Big Ten at #5.

I don't see a lot of difference between the two leagues this year.

Louisville, Pitt and UConn are better than any team in the Big 10 and would be favored as such on neutral court

Not so sure that there'd be much between MSU and Louisville or Pittsburgh. I'd like the matchups, especially against Louisville.

I think you missed my point. On average, the leagues are not really very different and the Big Ten may be stronger because the Big East have such a bad bottom drawer. Look at the Sagarins. There is only one Big Ten team ranked below Iowa at #78. There are five Big East teams below Iowa.

Putting this a different way, if you were to draw a random sample of 11 teams from their conference, more than 60% of the time, you wouldn't get the top three teams. However, you'd be much more likely to get at least three of those five bottom dwellers. The rest of the Big Ten and Big East teams are closely bunched in the power ratings.

So, my point again is, sure UConn and Pitt seem to be really good teams. Louisville also looks good right now, but got smacked 90-57 by Notre Dame and then played out the weaker end of their schedule (DePaul, Providence, Seton Hall, Cincinnati were four of the six), so it is not clear how tough they are. On the other hand, about one in three teams is suspect, in fact, bad.

So, it's not clear to me why the entire conference is getting so much love from some of the media. That said, the Big Ten is getting a fair amount of love this year as well.

What was your point?

I don't care what statistics or Sagrin say. UConn, Pitt and Louisville have a chance to make history and be the first conference to have 3 number one seeds. Louisville losing one game in a conference schedule means anything? Michigan State lost to Northwestern so they must not be any good. North Carolina lost to Santa Clara the year they beat Illinois in the title game.

I'm not going to deny the bottom is bad but that conference is a beast. I think the Big 10 is a far more competitive conference but I think if you looking at the cream the Big East the conference.

There's only a lot of bad teams because there's a lot of teams.

From the games I've watched this year, I don't think there's any way that MSU would be favored over UConn/Pitt/Louisville on a neutral court... Those three teams are very, very good...
I think they all have weaknesses, but in general fewer of them than anyone in the Big-10...
The Big East only had 4 teams with records below .500 for the season (Rutgers, USF, DePaul, and St. John's). If you look at the other teams that finished middle of the pack, most of their losses were in conference (ND 10/14, GTown 11/14, Cincy 10/14, SH 11/15)... So those teams got beat up by the top 7 (Louisville, Pitt, UConn, Nova, Cuse, WVU, Providence) that all won double digit games in the conference... It's a very tough conference...

Nice. It works both ways.

And that is exactly my point. Nothing more or less.

I didn't say MSU would be favored on a neutral court or anything else. Didn't say they'd definitely beat Louisville or Pitt. I said I like the matchups. I think it would be much more of a game than folks seem to think it would be.

I wouldn't...
I don't think that Louisville as the dominating big man like Pittsburgh and UConn so I think that MSU would give them a very good game on a neutral court. However, it would all boil down to who was sitting there shots on that specific day. They are that equal IMO
