Big 10 Tournament Champs

It's just a hunch really. Illinois started to trail off at year's end. In their last two series, they lost 3 of 4 at Minnesota then lost 3 of 4 to Iowa at home. OSU is a totally different team than the one that was swept by Illinois at the beginning of conference play. I think we will ride our momentum and surprise them.

I imagine we will see scott byrnes tommorow. He has pitched very well down the stretch for Purdue., but I would still rather face him than Illinois ace Brian Bloomquiest.

IMO the game we won today was the championship game. It wont get any tougher than Jim Brauer. I feel very good about our chances to win this thing.
I wonder how soon Meister can throw again..i sure dont want to see Trey Fausnaugh unless we have a 10 run lead.

At the end of 5 innings, it's 3-2 Buckeyes. Purdue got 2 in the second, and Rabin hit a 3-run HR in the 3rd.

8th inning, still 3-2. Bucks have Zoeller on second base with no outs after a single and a steal.

Wow. Schirtzinger struck out but reached 1st safely on a passed ball. Then Jedidiah Stephen doubled to score a pair.

5-2 Buckeyes, Purdue's changing pitchers.

Bottom of the 8th. Purdue got an infield single, a double, and another single. It's now 5-4, with a man on 2nd with 1 out after a sacrifice bunt.

Base hit, now 5-5. Got a DP, going to the 9th tied up.

Caravati and Bourquin singled after 1 out. First & third, 1 out. Zoeller struck out swinging, but Schirtzinger singled to make it 6-5.

Bottom of the 9th now, Madsen still pitching, bottom of the order for Purdue.

Leadoff single, sac. bunt to second, went to 3rd on a fielder's choice. Man on third with 2 out.

Bucks win 6-5, still in the winner's bracket! tOSU will play the Illinois-Minny winner.

Steve Caravati
had four
two-strike hits in
the 6-5 win over
Purdue.

May 26, 2005

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Wes Schirtzinger drove in Steve Caravati with a single to right in the top of the ninth inning to lift Ohio State to a 6-5 victory over No. 2 seed Purdue in the second round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday at Illinois Field. The win was the sixth straight for the Buckeyes in their last at bat and moves them to the semifinal Friday at 8:05 p.m., EDT, against the winner of the Illinois vs. Minnesota game being played Thursday night.

Caravati, a senior from Dover, Ohio (Dover), beat out an infield single with one out in the ninth inning and then stole second. Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) moved Caravati to third on a single that caromed off the top of the Purdue shortstop's glove. After a strikeout, Schirtzinger, a sophomore from Westerville, Ohio (Westerville North), singled to right to bring in the senior co-captain for the one-run lead. The Boilermakers still had to bat.

Andy Dahl led off the inning with an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Osborn. A groundout by Dane Wolfe put Dahl 90-feet from tying the game. That brought first-team All-Big Ten shortstop Mitch Hilligoss to the plate and on a 1-2 count he fired a shot that appeared would score Dahl and perhaps send the game to extra innings, but Caravati, the 2004 Big Ten Player of the Year, dove to catch up to the ball and end the game, sending the Buckeyes to the Big Ten semifinal.

Caravati, no doubt, was the hero for the Buckeyes. He had four hits, including three singles and a double, and all four hits came with two strikes. It was the fifth time in his career that he had five hits in a game. As a team, Ohio State pounded out 14 hits and overcame an error and limited Purdue to nine hits. The Buckeyes also got the fourth complete game of the season from starter Mike Madsen (Sr., Canfield, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season (7-3). Madsen allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and struck out only two batters without a walk. It was Madsen's third career win in the Big Ten tournament in four starts.

Purdue struck first crossing two runners across the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Spencer Ingaldson bounced a single through the left side and went to second on a ground out by Neal Gorka. Dahl sent a shot up the middle to score Ingaldson before Madsen hit Osborn. That moved Dahl to second before he scored on a single to right by Dane Wolfe to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead.

Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead in the top of the third with his fourth career home run. His second home run of the season cleared the wall in left-center field and scored Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling). Fryer drew a four-pitch, one-out walk before getting to third on a single through the right side by Angle.

After Madsen got Hilligoss to ground out to end the Boilermaker second inning, he went on to sit down the next 10 Purdue batters before Eric Wolfe doubled with one out in the sixth. Madsen responded to catch John Hunter looking at strike three and then got Ingaldson to pop out to short to leave Wolfe at second.

The fifth-seeded Buckeyes tried to ride the momentum into the seventh, but left two runners in scoring position. Rabin sent a two-out single to left and went to third on a single by Caravati. Caravati was able to reach second on a throw trying to catch Rabin at third, but a ground out prevented any Ohio State runs in the inning. The hit for Rabin was his second of the game, while Caravati hit for the third time. His double in the third was the 44th of his career, which equals the seventh-best total in school history.

Two more Ohio State runners scored in the eighth to build the lead to 5-2. Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled up the middle and stole second before Schirtzinger reached on a passed ball after striking out. Zoeller was able to move to third before Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) doubled to the gap in left-center field to score both runners for a three-run lead. The Buckeyes left Stephen at second after he reached there without an out.

That proved to be costly when Purdue tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hilligoss got the inning started with an infield single before going to third on a double by Mike Coles. Wolfe singled up the middle to make it a 5-4 game, but he was able to score from second to tie the game on a fielding error on Stephen on a sharply hit ball off the bat of Ingaldson.

Rabin, Zoeller and Stephen each had two hits for Ohio State. Rabin was 2-for-3 with a career-high tying three RBI, while Zoeller was 2-for-4 and Stephen was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.

Trae Dauby got the loss for Purdue. He came on in relief in the eighth inning and gave up the winning run on two hits. He had one strikeout. Wolfe and Dahl had two hits to lead Purdue, which fell to 25-29 overall. Ohio State improved to 37-17 overall and has won 19 of 22 games to become one of the hottest teams in the nation at the right time of the year.

No. 4 seed Michigan eliminated No. 3 seed Iowa with an 8-6 win in the first elimination game of the tournament earlier in the day Thursday. The Buckeyes will play the winner of the Illinois vs. Minnesota game Friday at 8:05 p.m., EDT. A win Friday put s Ohio State in the championship game of the Big Ten tournament for the fourth straight year. All of Ohio State's postseason games will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM) and on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

Paul Farinacci's three-run
homer in the 13th propelled
the Buckeyes past the
Wolverines, 7-3.

May 25, 2005

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Ohio State scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning, including a three-run home run by Paul Farinacci, to down Michigan 7-3 to win its opening game of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday at Illinois Field.

With the score knotted 3-3 after each team scored a run in the 12th inning, Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) gave the Buckeyes the lead on an RBI double over the head of Michigan third baseman A.J. Scheidt that sailed down the left field line. Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. He came out of the game in favor of the quicker legs of Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), who went to third on a single through the right side by Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South). Zoeller then scored Howell to take a 4-3 lead.

Wes Schirtzinger (So., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) was intentionally walked to load the bases for Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), who reached on a fielder's choice, though his grounder to third led to the first two outs of the inning. Farinacci, a senior from Westlake Village, Calif. (Agoura) launched his second home run of the year to left to add three more runs and build the lead to 7-3.

Michigan (40-16) had two hits in the bottom of the inning, but Rory Meister (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) struck out the side to strand runners at the corners and earn his fifth straight win since May 15. Meister pitched 5.2 innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on five hits and walked four to go with his three 13th-inning strikeouts. The runs were his first allowed against a Big Ten opponent since the game at Michigan on April 22 in Ann Arbor. The only run he had given up since that game came against Cleveland State on May 4 at Bill Davis Stadium in a 12-4 win.

The first of those two runs Wednesday enabled the Wolverines to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth. His first walk of the day came with one out to Brad Roblin, who went on to steal second before Scheidt singled up the middle to tie the game.

The Buckeyes took the lead in the top of the 12th on an RBI single up the middle by Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling), who scored Schirtzinger, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Michigan responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Chris Getz, who doubled to left-center field to bring in Doug Pickens, who reached on a one-out double. Getz was able to get to third on a fielding bobble by centerfielder Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), a first-team All-Big Ten selection. So with a runner at third, Meister intentionally walked his next two batters to load the bases and then got Matt Butler to ground into a 3-2-3 double play that seemed to give the Buckeyes momentum heading into their last at-bat.

The win was the fifth consecutive win in its last at bat for Ohio State and the fifth win for Meister since May 15, only 11 days ago. Meister is now 8-0 on the year with four saves.

Schirtzinger led the Buckeyes in going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Bourquin, Zoeller and Farinacci each had two of the Buckeyes 12 hits. Bourquin was 2-for-5, Zoeller was 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored, while Farinacci was 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Michigan out-hit Ohio State by one and each team had one error.

Ohio State (36-17) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning capitalizing on an error on Wolverine shortstop Leif Mahler. Zoeller singled to right with one out and then went to second on a nubber down the third-base line. Both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball on Wolverine catcher Jeff Kunkel. Mahler could not come up with the ball on a grounder by Farinacci and both runners scored as the ball went into shallow center field.

Roblin pulled the Wolverines within a one-run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double to the gap in right-center field that scored Kunkel to make it a 2-1 game. Kunkel reached on a two-out single to left.

Caravati doubled in the third, but Michigan starter Jim Brauer retired the next 12 batters before Schirtzinger finally broke the string in the seventh with a single up the middle. Michigan's defense turned a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. Farinacci led off the eighth with a single to right and was bunted to second by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and to third by Angle. He was stranded there though on a ground out by Rabin.

Buckeye starter Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) pitched well by comparison, limiting Michigan to one run in each of the first three innings before Michigan got back-to-back hits in the fourth to get on the score board. DeLucia came back to retire the side in the fifth and the first two batters of the sixth before giving up a base hit. He got a pop up to escape the inning.

It then became a game of small ball. Roblin led off with a single to right-center field and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by A.J. Scheidt, but DeLucia got a line out and a ground out to again get out of the inning unscathed. But in the bottom of the eighth, Chris Getz singled to left to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Eric Rose that put Getz at second, Buckeye skipper Bob Todd went to the bullpen to bring in the hottest pitcher in the Big Ten in Meister. DeLucia allowed one run on eight hits in 7.1 innings and left with a walk and four strikeouts and did not weigh into the decision.

Meister, who won all four games last week - a non-conference game against Miami (Ohio) and all three wins over Minnesota last weekend at Bill Davis Stadium - came on and got a fly out and a ground out to strand Getz in scoring position in the eighth. Meister threw 92 pitches compared to 89 by DeLucia.

At 13 innings, the game was the longest game played in the history of the 25th year of the Big Ten tournament, topping three 12-inning games, including a 4-3 Michigan win over Ohio State in 1994. The win in the last at bat was Ohio State's seventh this season fifth straight.

Brauer pitched 10 innings and did not factor into the decision. He limited the Buckeyes to two unearned runs on five hits and struck out six against two walks, both in the ninth inning. He gave way to Derek Feldkamp to start the 11th. Feldkamp pitched three innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks with no strikeouts. He fell to 9-4 on the year.

The Buckeyes now move on to play No. 2 seed Purdue or No. 1 seed and tournament host Illinois. If Iowa beats Minnesota later today, Ohio State will play Illinois Thursday at 8:05 p.m., EDT, but if the Golden Gophers win, Ohio State will play Purdue at 4:35 p.m. All postseason games will be broadcast by NPR 820 (WOSU-AM) and on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

Minnesota downed Illinois 11-8. That's 25 runs for them in the 2 tourney games. I hope those bats are cooled off at 8:05 Eastern tonight.

Just tuned in. Bucks down 0-2 bottom half of 1st. One out Rabin on first and Caravatti up now.

The wind is carrying out. Caravatti sails one to deep left center field off the wall, ends up with a triple and Rabin scores to make it 1-2 Gophers.

Where's BB73 for the play by play?

Ronnie Bourquins RBI single up the middle makes it 3-2 Bucks still one out in the first!

Back to back strikeouts end the inning but the Bucks regain the lead 3-2 after one inning.

Nice to be missed.

It's 6-5 Minny in the bottom of the 5th. But the Bucks have runners on the corners with nobody out.

After a pop-up and a strikeout, there's 2 outs with Stephen up. Another pop-up, a real opportunity lost last inning.
