Worst...
- Two of those "emo" band singers recently did a cover of Queen/Bowie's "Under Pressure" that pissed me off to no end.

Anybody trying to sing a song done by Freddie Mercury originally is begging to suck by comparison. Imagining some whiny emo voices doing it makes me cringe just thinking about it.

Edit: copying my post since I bumped myself to the next page

I always really liked Rage Against the Machine's cover of Maggie's Farm. The whole Renegades CD is filled with pretty good covers (I think) but that one stands out to me.

And for worst I'll nominate the hack job that Limp Bizkit did to Behind Blue Eyes.

Here are some great covers....

Cake- I Will Survive (listed at least twice here)
Primus- The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Johnny Cash- Hurt.
Johnny Cash- The Long and Winding Road
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones- Detroit Rock City
Sid Vicious- My Way
Metallica- Whiskey in the Jar
Frank Zappa- Ring of Fire
Social Distortion- Ring of Fire

A local band from the 90s used to close with a very good cover of Sympathy for the Devil. (Band is Room 19)

Romo's Personal Favs:
DMB - If I Had A Boat
Cash - Hurt
Cash - I'm On Fire
Korn - One
Travis Tritt - Burning Love
Velvet Underground - Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Ra - Every Little Think She Does Is Magic
The Six Parts Seven - Sleeping Diagonally
Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights

Covers Romo Can't Stand:
Sheryl Crow - D'yer Mak'er, since when is this a cutsie song?
Madonna - American Pie, wreched, aweful, Don McLean had to have been pissed
Manson - Sweet Dreams, hated the song to begin with, hated it even more after the cover
Punk band covers in general, not a fan...although Me First and the Gimme Gimme's are tolerable
and I really hated the Gin and Juice cover by whoever did it...terrible, anyone who thinks it was good is misinformed, sorry.

Great:
Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide
A Perfect Circle - Imagine
10000 Maniacs - Because the Night
Cash - Hurt

Good:
Metallica - Turn the Page
Cake - I will Survive
Lacuna Coil - Enjoy the Silence
Pretty much all of the covers on Nirvana Unplugged
The Used and MCR - Under Pressure
I have a whole cd of punk covers that I love

Bad:
Any country covers especially of non country songs
I just heard a gay country cover of the new Hinder song - Lips of an Angel

Worst:
Does that horrible "If I were a rich girl" song count? And that is after a good No Doubt cover of End of the World on MTV. What the hell happened to Gwen?

Flotsam and Jetsam did a real good version of that song back in the late eighties. Flotsam and Jetsam was the band that Jason Newsted was in before he joined Metallica.

Tesla's rendition of "Signs" was pretty damn good too.

Just heard "Where Did Our Love Go" by The Supremes on the drive home, and it reminded me of the extended version of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" where they transition into "Where Did Our Love Go"...quite original and it blended very well.

As much as I like Red Rowan, I thought you knew that it was already established musical canon that All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix was the best cover of all time. Dylan himself was quoted as saying something like 'Watchtower was a Jimi Hendrix song that I just happened to write'.
Definitely, absolutely the best Dylan cover, and best cover ever, from an artist who really did great work covering Dylan.

As for worst cover .. I'm surprised no-one has brought up that ugly piece of detritus inflicted upon the rest of the world by William Shatner ...

not just a bad cover, but truly one of the worst recordings made by anyone, anywhere, at any time since the invention of the Phonograph.

First he did the infamous talking and no singing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds ..

then he butchered Mr Tambourine Man on this piece of trash.
