Best Ohio player & best Ohio State basketball player

I saw Jerry Lucas play in person a lot being from Middletown. He could do things with his shot I didnt think people could do! My two best High School players that I ever watched, while they were in high school, are Cris Carter and Greg Simpson.

Cris Carter was a better basketball player than football player in high school. Nothing more need be said there.

Greg Simpson was unbelievable for Lima. When we signed him I thought we were in for some special basketball times. I watched Greg play against Hamilton's Big Blue and come down the court two times in a row, one step beyond half court and drain it. Unbelievable range and he could get to the basket and dunk on anyone. Sick ability and wasted freaking talent.

In college my two personal favorites were Dennis Hopson and Jay Burson.
Jay was all effort and had perfect basketball skills. Perfect form, perfect effort, perfect attitude. His injury was one of the saddest days of my life. Dennis Hopson's duel with Rex Chapman from Kentucky was a game I'll never forget.

Wasn't Greg Simpson supposed to be a better high school player than Jimmy Jackson?

Don't know about that, but I do know that Lakota beat Lima Senior 3 times in the 1992 season, the last game being the state championship. So I would put Keith Gregor ahead of Simpson out of that era alone.

Roger Bacon beat SVSM for the state championship LeBron's junior year, but no one is going to argue that Josh Hausfeld-best Bacon player,MiamiU signee-is better than LeBron.....

People still talk about Dwight Anderson in Dayton, too bad crack got the better of him.
I have heard of him and heard that he was very very good but never got to see him play while he was in high school.
Buckeye-I honestly had not watched any Buckeye hoops before the JJ era, so I cannot compare Lucas or Special K
For those of you who say Jim Jackson in high school or at Ohio State, I know you must be the young pups. Jackson was more of a power player in high school and could physically dominate guys his age. He was not that good of a shooter from outside of 15' and did not extend that range more while at Ohio State. I will admit that he was gifted in all phases of the game but to compare him with Lucas while Jerry was in college is not realistic IMO Hondo was a very good college player but without Lucas the team of the early 60s would not have been as good as they were. Hondo was probably a better professional player than a college one.

I sort of forgot about Nick Ratliff and Conner and "Bo" Lamar ...

The three you name played on one of the best HS teams the state produced and in no small way brought about the downfall of the best coach Ohio ever produced, one Fred Taylor. (Bobby Knight will gladly tell you who taught him how to coach) All three complained that Taylor never offered them anything beyond a scholarship, and went elsewhere. That created the lie that Taylor couldn't, or wouldn't, recruit black players

Don't forget Robin Freeman, the man who built St. John Arena. If it hadn't been for him there's no way the Buckeyes would have gotten the arena, Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek.

Best Ohio College player? Hands down, The Big O at Cincinnati.

The two top Buckeye's? Havlicek and Greg Oden.

Best Buckeye father and son combination? Bill Hosket Sr. and Bill Hosket Jr.

Just an observation, much as I like Jimmy Jackson, with the game on the line against Michigan for the final four berth, Jackson simply melted into the floor, as if he didn't want the ball, intimidated by the Michigan defense.

Yeah, I remember hearing those "rumors" but it is sort of funny then later on Coach Taylor did recruit Jim Clemens out of Columbus although from a different Columbus public school.

I mentioned Robin Freeman in one of my earlier posts. It was one of the first pure jump shooters in the college game.

When you talk about all colleges in Ohio, I think you have to throw Oscar and Lucas up there together.

Disagreeing regarding the best Ohio State players. Greg was not here long enough and the Ohio State teams without Lucas would not have been as good as they were but if you took Hondo away they would have been close to where they ended up. There were substitutes for Hondo but none for Lucas as was proved when we played against Cincinnati and Paul Hogue.

estanban weaver columbus .
I saw him abuse kobe bryant in the ohio red vs. penn all star team.
Both were freshman and the best players on those talented teams.
I think he played with ken gregory/kansas for a year in high school

Gregory and Redd graduate the same year from high school and I don't believe Weaver graduated that year. Saying that, Weaver if he had lived up to his expectations would probably had been the best high school player ever to come out of Columbus. I don't think Gregory and Weaver ever played together in high school but can't say for sure.

I'm part of the Lucas era, but as far as HSers go, LeBron has to be about the best for all-around game. There were some better scorers out there (and Special K, Lucas, Deibler, Ed Ratliff, and a couple that went to Indiana and Kentucky) were scorers, etc. (Add Jay Burson here also).

As far as the OSU player, Lucas has to be the best, with "1a" going to Kellog, Jackson, Hoskett. As far as OHIO college player goes, gotta give the not to Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati). In the NBA he AVERAGED a triple-double for several years.

Maxbuck, while at Whetstone, blocked Bo Lamar's shot when he played for East. We lost that one, 104-52 by the way.

Living in the Columbus area the best H.S. basketball players I've personally seen play:
Michael Redd (West H.S.)
Drew Lavender (Brookhaven)
Ron Lewis (Brookhaven)
Brandon Foust (Brookhaven)

...and I hope to see Jared this fall!
