Best Movies of all time

Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
I did a search and I am surprised that this has not been a topic. There was a worst movie thread but not a "best of" thread.
<O:p</O:p

I have always enjoyed quality movies and over the years have a top ten list that I have developed in my head.

<O:p</O:p
Keep in mind that this is my list of BEST movies ever made, not movies that I like to watch the best. I have Animal House and Slapshot as movies I love to watch but not necessarily one of the best movies ever made.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

Here goes:<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

1. Pulp Fiction<O:p</O:p
2. Citizen Cane<O:p</O:p
3. Raging Bull
4. 2001<O:p</O:p
5. Casablanca<O:p</O:p
6. Leon: The Professional<O:p</O:p
7. Natural Born Killers<O:p</O:p
8. Clockwork Orange<O:p</O:p
9. The Exorcist
10. Apocalypse Now

Honorable mentions; The Godfather, The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Easy Rider, Shampoo, The Great Train Robery, and The Shining. I was tempted to put a Hitchcock like North by Northwest, Rear Window or Psyco on there, but had a hard time bumping off one of the others. He is certainly one of my top 10 directors.<O:p</O:p

Remember the Titans-Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors, and the story behind this movie is incredible, and I really enjoy this one.

Frequency- Two of my favorite actors, Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel are in this, and the story/plot is amazing. If you guys haven't seen this, yet, then I strongly recommend it.

What is the criteria for deciding "best"? I mean, is it movies that changed cinema, movies that had a dramatic effect on society, movies that give the best/most accurate portrayal of an event or idea, or what?

Here is a list of very good movies that everyone should watch(if they were first books, you should READ them):

Citizen Cane
Raging Bull
Dr. Strangelove
Apocalypse Now
Casablanca
Taxi Driver
The Godfather
Goodfellas
Gone With the Wind
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mocking Bird
Of Mice and Men
Shawshank Redemption
Sleepers
The Exorcist
Glory
Mississippi Burning
The Sting
Cool Hand Luke
The Natural
Hoosiers
Chariots of Fire
Platoon
Rocky
Dances With Wolves
Unforgiven
Saving Private Ryan
Forrest Gump
True Romance
Shane
High Noon
The Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Boondock Saints
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Seven
12 Monkeys
The Green Mile
Open Range
Last of the Mohicans
Braveheart

I can't narrow it down to 10. I like at least 20 equally and I have 5 all time favorites.

I would say yes to all the above. My top ten are the movies that were the most influential AND were executed to perfection IMO. I always give the better rating to a movie that creates a genre. Natural Born Killers is just this type of movie. Not my favorite but it is a very important film. Another example is you have Reservoir Dogs on your list. A fabulous movie. But I would place Pulp Fiction higher because of it's effect on the Movie Biz and it created a Genre that other films have explored.

Long lists are too easy. If you cannot do top 10 (and it was hard) I would say top 5 minimum. Top 10 is great because I think many of us will agree on the top 5. The 5-10 is a gray area that is fun to debate.

BTW Dr Stangelove is awesome, I just could not do 3 Kubricks (Clockwork and 2001) even though he could have 4 on my list with The Shining.

Good lists up there...maybe these aren't in the top 10 per se, but to add something here are a few "under the radar" specials that I really liked:

American History X
Judgement at Nuremberg
Lord of Illusions (the opening intro was especially creepy)
Marathon Man
Halloween
North Dallas Forty
Gettysburg

Breaker Morant
Titus
Henry V (Branagh version)
Dead Again
Infernal Affairs
The Dinner Game
Dodgeball (Everyone has a guilty pleasure)

Ok I have heard of none of those except Dodgeball

I would have to list favs in each genre, because I am a movie freak, but if I tried to pick......

1. The Godfather
2. Braveheart
3. Kill Bill
4. A Tale of 2 Sisters (Korean, but one of the most brilliant stories ever)
5. Goodfellas
6. Tombstone

I am probably leaving some out.
