I'll take it a step further. If you live in a major metro area, try Pyrat Rum. It's excellent barrel aged rum. Even the cheapest level is good enough to drink neat in a snifter, and it's still cheap enough (around $30) to use in Egg Nog.

Seconding OCBW, though, any dark rum is a great choice. Good (no E&J) Brandy is also a classic.

I like Brandy or Wiskey in mine. 12 eggs, 1 qt cream, 1 qt whole milk, nutmeg, cinnamon.

In my family the Brandy is used for a drink we imbibe as a desert because it's made with vanilla ice cream. It's got some other stuff in it, I've never made it only enjoyed it. It's a post-Christmas dinner tradition.

For a somewhat lower cal but still festive holiday treat, try scotch and whole milk. (Don't waste the Macallan on this; JW Red will work just fine.) Can be enjoyed cold or heated.
