Great thread! For me personally think it's so close between the '02 and '05 team, that if they played each other the game would never end. Haha, great defenses, one offense led by MoC, the biomechular, nuclear, rocket scientist Krenzel and Mr. Clutch himself Michael Jenkins vs. the wizard Troy Smith, the recievers Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzales and of course the workhorse Antonio Pittman. Man, what a classic that would be.

No one can take anything away from a 14-0 season capped with a NC, but also you can't take away from an '05 team that lost 2 games to a cinderella story team in Penn State and the eventual national champion Texas, and holding those teams to very close games. 2 magical Buckeye teams with 2 outcomes.

Now, start this poll again in mid-January and we may have a new #1......

'05 was more talented than '02, I believe.

'02 had a ton of heart. But just look at this lineup for the '05 Defense:

AJ Hawk, Bobby Carp, Schlegal, Pitcock, Jay Richardson, Ashton Youboty, Donte Whitner

Offense:

Teddy Ginn, Troy Smith, Santonio Holmes, Anthony Gonzales, Nick Mangold, Antonio Pittman

I mean DAMN that is one impressive list!

Between 02 and 05 (IMO):

QB - Passing skills - Smith
Clutch Plays - Krenzel...Krenzel also had a better backup than Smith

RB - #13 over Pittman

WR - Ginn, Gonzo, Homes over Jenkins, Gamble, Vance

TE - Hartsock over Hamby

OL - 2002 over 2005, but would take Mangold over Stepanovich

DL - 2002 over 2005, the play of Scott was nasty, he lit up QBs like they were going out of style

LB - Hawk, Carpenter, Deer Hunter over Wilhelm, Reynolds, Grant

DB - Without a doubt 2002 over 2005. The 2002 squad seemed more cohesive.

P - Groom over Trapasso

I hear this all the time and it's not completely true the 05 Texas team did the same.

No they did not, Texas went 13-0 that year. Where you getting "14-0" from this:

Louisiana-Lafayette
Ohio St.
Rice
Missouri
Oklahoma
Colorado
Texas Tech
Oklahoma St.
Baylor (TX)
Kansas
Texas A&M
Colorado
Southern California

Im getting 13....

2002, and I don't think its that close either. Anybody that has forgotten needs to rerun some of their game recordings and watch MoC run, or watch that D-Line play. IMHO, that D-Line would have run over, around, and through the '05 & 06 O-Lines just like Florida ultimately did.

I think this 2008 team has the potential of being OSU's best team since 1997. 2006 was blown in the NC, 2005 ended well but started slow, 2007 wasnt supposed to be great....I think the 1997 team is Ohio State's best team ever (After Woody and Brown). I also believe that this 2008 squad can overcome the 1997 team and win a NC.

I feel the same. If the buckeyes had that D-LINE the last 2 years. Two more titles to go with 2002.

I am going to have to go with this year. Look at all the starters we have returning from last year. There were some speculations of us being the best team last year in a long time, and we have 18 of 22 starters returning. Plus we have probably the one of the most dominant Defenses of all time at Ohio State, the Best RB in the nation, one of the best kickers in the nation. We have a really good team enterring the 2008 season.

We'll see, Jax. I don't disagree with that second quote.

The 1973 team allowed 64 points in 11 games. Thats 5.8 ppg for those keeping track at home.

Wake me up if 2008 can keep opponents to double that.

They gave up 166 last year. 100 in the 11 games against the sisters of the poor and 66 to the two good teams they played and lost to.

Give me a huge fucking break on all the 2008 GOAT hype untill they do something on the field.
