How about this? Of all the teams we have lost to in the decade, who would win in a tournament of sorts?

Minnesota (2000)
Purdue (2000, 2004)
Michigan (2000, 2003)
South Carolina (2000, 2001)
UCLA (2001)
Penn State (2001, 2005)
Wisconsin (2001, 2003, 2004)
Illinois (2001, 2007)
Northwestern (2004)
Iowa (2004)
Texas (2005)
Florida (2006)
LSU (2007)

Mods, split this post off if you want.

Texas '05 and its not even all that close.

There has been a 2 year drought in CFB of those type of real powerhouse teams like Texas, USC, OSU and PSU in '05 imo.

I think '08 sees the return of multiple "one for the ages" type teams.

Without a doubt I had to go with 2002. The senior leadership on that team would not let us lose, sure we came close 7 times to losing, but the perseverance they had cannot be over looked. That defense was the best we've seen in a looong time, Doss, Nickey, Gamble, Anderson, Smith, Peterson, Scott, Fraser, Grant, Wilhelm, Hawk, to name a few...

Not to mention the offense that just wouldn't quit, Krenzel to Jenkins, Clarett, Hall, the offensive line, and a kicker who shattered the record books that year, Nugent.

Afterwards I'd have to say 2005 was the second best team we've had this decade simply, again, for the defense they had. 2006 right after them, because that offense was easily the best we've had all decade.

In order I'd rank them:

1) 2002
2) 2005
3) 2006
4) 2003
5) 2007
6) 2004
7) 2001
8) 2000

I'll wait to see what this 2008 team can really do this year, but they definitely have the potential to top the list!

Hmmmmm. Yeah, Texas has Vince Young, far and away the best player the Bucks faced, but 2007 LSU had talent all over the field.

I will never figure out just what happened in the Florida game. Certainly more Gator talent than anticipated, but their QB couldn't find his ass with a compass and a map until that night.

2002 should get the respect they have earned.

That team had the grit and focus that could have been used in 2006 and the ability to find a way to make a play when it needed too that Ohio State desperately needed against LSU.

That said, the 2002 team beat easily the best team that any of the other teams listed faced, the 2002/03 Miami Hurricanes. Let's remember what they accomplished in beating that team. They ended one of the most impressive modern dynasties. They ended a very impressive win streak where Miami had barely been challenged. They won when virtually no one outside of Columbus gave them a shot to be within 40. No other team on the list has overcome both the odds and adversity of that team - and that could be combined even and still be true.

Give it too them, from Holy Buckeye to the desert 2002 has to be the team of the decade so far.

Gotta go with Greg and Jwins' reasons. The 2002 had the best team on both sides of the ball and never cashed in their chips. Miami Had a great team too.
Texas was the best team we faced though not by much.

No way I can put a 2 loss team that beat a very inexperienced OSU team for the title above an undefeated Texas team that beat loaded OSU and USC teams in their year.

Most successful? that's easy 2002. But best team? 2006 with lots of room to spare.

That '06 D would've gotten it's ass kicked by a healthy Clarett and the OL would've been manhandled by the '02 DL. 2002 didn't have the star power of '06 but there's no doubt in my mind it was the better team.

2002 - "The Cardiac Kids"

I probably lost 5 years off of my life by the time the season was over. Playing from behind as many times as they did, against some of the best teams that DI had to offer that year, and going 14-0 with a BCS NC:

A special group of kids. They stand alone...

:oh:

2002 has to win this just because they brought home the goods. However, if '06 won they would have been #1. Let's wait to see what '08 does. Hopefully it does something as special as '02 did.

Agreed.

They played a much tougher schedule than any other team on that list and came home as the only 14-0 team in OSU history. Also untill we see what becomes of the '08 team in the draft no other team had as much top to bottom depth of NFL talent.

More talent+better record + tougher schedule + NC = 2002 was the best team of the decade hands down.

Now HERE is something we can agree on...

Come on people. National Championship vs. no National Championship is not a contest. As for "most successful" vs. "best"; how in the blue fuck do you rate the best without looking at success?

Forgetting that for a moment; the Big Ten has been down for the past few years. The Big Ten was rock-solid in '02. The conference was 5-2 in bowls that year. That team survived a better conference than any other on the list and they did it undefeated.
