Bengals WR Chris Henry (official thread)

Dispatch

A column by Bob Hertzel in the Times West Virginian of Fairmont, W.Va., blames Chris Henry's off-field problems on a lack of discipline by Rodriguez when he coached West Virginia. Henry, a former WVU receiver who was released last week by the Cincinnati Bengals after his fifth arrest, apparently had problems in Morgantown that went unpunished by the WVU coaching staff.
"Multiple sources within the athletic department and football program say Henry was much worse than his public image," Hertzel wrote, "and that public image was never exactly heroic."

Henry suspended pending the outcome of his trial

Associated Press

Updated: June 13, 2008, 6:07 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has been suspended by the NFL pending the outcome of his trial later this month, his agent said Friday.
The Bengals released Henry on April 3 after he was arrested for the fifth time. Henry is scheduled for trial June 24 in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court on charges of assault and criminal damaging. A man accused Henry of punching him in the face and breaking his car window with a beer bottle.
Henry had received permission from the judge to try out with other NFL teams. Commissioner Roger Goodell has blocked him from doing so until his case is heard, agent Marvin Frazier said. If Henry is acquitted, the suspension could be lifted, Frazier said.

The rollercoaster offseason for former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry took another odd turn Tuesday.
Henry's court case for assault in Hamilton County (Ohio) that alleged he punched an 18-year old in the face on March 31 resulted in a hung jury as the group of eight jurors were unable to reach an agreement.
During the trial, the judge dismissed a second charge of criminal damaging. The Bengals released Henry on April 3 after his fifth arrest since 2005, and last month he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL.
But for now, the undetermined verdict on the assault charge leaves Henry's playing status up in the air for 2008.

Attorney: Ex-Bengal Henry is destitute

Despite making about $2.5 million since 2005 as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Chris Henry is so broke he wants taxpayers to pay for a record of his trial.
"He's broke," said Perry Ancona, the former wide receiver's attorney said Tuesday, July 8. "He doesn't have any money to pay for a transcript."
Ancona filed a motion asking for taxpayers to pay for a written transcript of Henry's trial. Henry was arrested after a March 31 incident and charged with criminal damaging and assault.
A judge threw out the criminal damaging charge, saying Cincinnati prosecutors couldn't prove the allegation. A mistrial was declared last week on the assault charge when jurors couldn't come to a unanimous verdict. When the trial ended, jurors said they voted 6-2 to acquit Henry.
But prosecutors said Tuesday they would retry Henry on the misdemeanor count. Henry's trial was set for Monday.
Henry signed a five-year,
$6 million contract after being drafted in 2005.
He received about $1 million to sign plus an average of just over $500,000 for the first three years. He was to be paid $520,000 this year, but the team released him after his arrest.
Despite that, Ancona said Henry, who has been suspended by the NFL, is destitute. "He has no funds whatsoever and can't even meet his current obligations," Ancona told the judge.
Henry's $360,000 Kentucky house was auctioned in May when he failed to pay the mortgage. Henry's SUV was repossessed last month.

Second assault trial for Henry ends with charge dropped

Associated Press

Updated: July 14, 2008, 11:44 AM ET

CINCINNATI -- A second assault trial for former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry has ended abruptly with prosecutors dropping the last remaining charge against him.
Henry was accused of punching a University of Cincinnati student in March and of breaking his car window with a beer bottle.
The first trial ended earlier this month when a jury could not reach a verdict on an assault charge against Henry and the judge dismissed another misdemeanor count, a charge of criminal damaging.
On Monday, prosecutors dropped the assault charge after a judge ruled against them on several motions just before the retrial was to begin.
The Bengals cut Henry after his April arrest, his fifth since joining the team in 2005. Henry remains under suspension by the National Football League.

Peter King MONDAY MORNING QB

Quote of the Week II

"Going back to the Bengals is possible. I wouldn't mind it happening because I loved playing in Cincinnati. I got real close with all the guys out there and I planned on being out there for a long time. I really had a good time playing ball out there in Ohio.''
-- Suspended former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, on the prospect of returning to the team.

If the Bengals do that, I will personally demand the entire front office be drug-tested.

Coach says Bengals not interested in embattled receiver Henry

Updated: July 22, 2008, 7:30 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Coach Marvin Lewis emphatically closed the door Tuesday on the possibility of receiver Chris Henry rejoining the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals released Henry in April after he was arrested for the fifth time, and the NFL suspended him indefinitely. His court case ended in a mistrial and prosecutors dropped the charges, prompting Henry to seek reinstatement and a chance to play in the NFL again.
Lewis said it won't be with the Bengals.
"I'm not interested," Lewis told reporters Tuesday, before the team's annual preseason luncheon. "I don't think it would be productive for our football team. You have to be a productive part to be an NFL player, and there's responsibilities to being an NFL player. It's a privilege, it's not a right. There's a lot that comes with being an NFL football player."
