Bengals notebook: Aggressive approach lauded

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 2:59 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Coach Marvin Lewis attributed the comments to the glow of a victorious postgame locker room.
But what Rudi Johnson and Dexter Jackson said Sunday after the Cincinnati Bengals beat the St. Louis Rams 19-10 was telling.
After the Bengals ran the ball down the Rams' throats on their final drive, Lewis said in his postgame news conference that Cincinnati had gotten back to running "Rudi-style" runs on that possession.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Right tackle Willie Anderson knows Bengals coach Marvin Lewis considers it verboten to reveal specifics about injuries.
But when Anderson heard his 10-year-old son ask about Internet rumors predicting the end of his career, he decided it was time to set the record straight, even if it might draw the coach's wrath.
"My son asked me, 'Are you retiring?' " Anderson said yesterday. "He reads Web sites and fan comments."

The Bengals' Domata Peko, left, sacking the Rams' Brock Berlin, has shown improvement in his second NFL season.

CINCINNATI -- Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko believes he can become a Pro Bowl player, an anchor of the line. His goal for this season, his second in the NFL, was more modest.
"I just wanted to be better than last year," he said. "The coaches have told me I've been doing good, so I'm just trying to keep it up."

Quarterback Shaun Hill celebrates as the final first down is made in the fourth quarter, allowing the 49ers to run out the clock.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The third quarterback was the charm for the San Francisco 49ers.
Shaun Hill passed for 197 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in his first NFL start, and the 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-13 last night.

Bengals notebook
Houshmandzadeh finds some solace in Pro Bowl spot

Thursday, December 20, 2007 3:22 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has had his most productive, most decorated season in what has been perhaps the most frustrating season of his career. For that reason, he compared his recent Pro Bowl invitation with playing in a consolation game.
The Cleveland Browns remain alive in the championship bracket, and they have a chance to clinch a playoff spot Sunday against the Bengals.
"I'm kind of jealous," Houshmandzadeh said. "They're in the position I want to be in."

Bengals: Palmer's struggles this season aren't all of his making

Friday, December 21, 2007 3:11 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson ran 10 yards to an open spot between two defenders, turned and looked for the ball. Carson Palmer threw a spiral that would have been a perfect pass if Johnson had cut toward the sideline. Instead, the ball skidded across the turf.
With that incomplete pass Saturday, another Bengals drive stalled, and a season's worth of aggravation was captured in five seconds: The star quarterback and star receiver interpreted the defense differently, so it did not matter that the pass was pretty or the route razor-sharp. All that mattered was that the offense settled for a field goal when it needed a touchdown.

The Browns' Joe Jurevicius catches a 17-yard touchdown pass against cornerback Leon Hall, one of five scoring passes allowed by the Bengals in a 51-45 loss in week two of the season.

CINCINNATI -- The last time they faced the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals allowed 51 points and 554 yards, including five touchdown passes. It was the type of performance that stays in a defensive back's head.
"It's good we get to face them a second time," Bengals cornerback Johnathan Joseph said.

CINCINNATI -- After spending the past two months trying to prove himself worthy, veteran Bengals tackle Willie Anderson will return to the field Sunday for the final home game of the season, perhaps his final game in Paul Brown Stadium in a Cincinnati uniform.
"Everybody plays on Senior Day," he said with a smile.

Chinedum Ndukwe (41) could move into the starting lineup next year if the Bengals lose or release some veterans.

CINCINNATI -- In a span of approximately 10 minutes Thursday, Bengals safeties Dexter Jackson and Madieu Williams suffered leg injuries that forced them to sit out Sunday's game. The Bengals had to use their 12th defensive lineup in 15 games, and the latest included three rookie defensive backs.
"Our younger guys, unfortunately, most of them have played," coach Marvin Lewis said.

Coach Marvin Lewis says defensive end Justin Smith, right, has been productive this season despite having only two sacks.

CINCINNATI -- Sunday's game at Miami could mark Justin Smith's final game with the Bengals, but the defensive end isn't in a nostalgic mood this week.
That's in keeping with Smith's personality. He thinks about the task at hand, and not much else.
"I'm worried that we've got Miami," Smith said. "That's all I'm concerned about."

CINCINNATI -- Little rides on the Bengals' season finale Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, a huge disappointment for a team that entered 2007 with lofty expectations.

It's hard to get worked up over Bengals' finale

Sunday, December 30, 2007 3:40 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Cincinnati Bengals mercifully end their season against one of the few teams that has had a worse year.
Today's game at the Miami Dolphins is so devoid of significance that its most compelling angle consists of a matchup between two players who might seldom line up against each other.
In March, Bengals offensive left tackle Levi Jones was attacked by Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and three accomplices at a Las Vegas casino. The volatile Porter and Jones competed for years when Porter was with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Jones still seems confused about the linebacker's motives.

Bengals bounce dubious Dolphins

Monday, December 31, 2007 2:52 AM

MIAMI -- The Cincinnati Bengals got the ball to open the second half looking for a knockout punch.
The Bengals had scored with four seconds left in the first half to go up 21-10 against the 1-15 Miami Dolphins.
But an interception gave Miami new life, for a couple of plays anyway.
Then rookie quarterback John Beck came off the bench for injured Cleo Lemon, dropped the snap on his first play and Dublin Coffman grad Chinedum Ndukwe picked up the ball and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown in the Bengals' 38-25 win yesterday.

Bengals: Lewis vows to figure out 'better way'

CINCINNATI -- One by one, Bengals players left Paul Brown Stadium yesterday carrying garbage bags full of equipment and mementos. It is unclear how many will ever return, and it might not become clear for a few months.
Around here, a 7-9 record generally has been an opportunity to preach patience, to emphasize the good and the chance it could become great. Coach Marvin Lewis has said this 7-9 season will spur significant offseason change, but he has declined to offer specifics.
