Once Grounded by Injury, QB Ben Mauk's Set to Return to his High-flying Ways with UC
BY BILL KOCH | [email protected]

After being redshirted as a freshman and then sharing the quarterback position with Cory Randolph for the next two seasons, Ben Mauk finally had achieved his goal of becoming the starting quarterback at Wake Forest.
There would be no more sharing of the job. He was the man now, leading the Demon Deacons against Syracuse in their 2006 season opener at home in Winston-Salem, N.C., and playing with a calm confidence that his coaches hadn't seen before.
It was the culmination of a long maturation process for the kid who had been a star at Kenton High School in Northwestern Ohio, where he won two Division IV state championships and set national records for completions (1,105), attempts (1,931) and yards (17,534).

Standing 20 yards away from his father, Ben Mauk could throw the football confidently, with speed and skill. Move back another five yards, though. Try that. See if you have the same zip, the same accuracy and the same confidence.
Mauk, the Wake Forest transfer who will compete for the University of Cincinnati starting quarterback job when the Bearcats open preseason practice Friday, would try it. But those 15 feet were a barrier he couldn't quite hurdle.

i think we need a thread, genius comments by jeffcat...sounds proimising, but it will be disappointing for him if that injury ended up ending his career. I remember him tearing apart portsmouth at state and standing at the 50 and launching the ball to his recievers in the endzone flat footed. guy had a great talent, but it is still hard to say where he is now.

NCAA mulling whether to give Cincinnati QB Mauk another season

January 29, 2008
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk has provided the NCAA with more information about his surgically rebuilt passing shoulder, hoping to get another season of eligibility to play for the Bearcats.
Mauk overcame a career-threatening injury while leading the Bearcats to a No. 17 final ranking, the best finish in school history. With Mauk running a spread offense, the Bearcats finished 10-3, including a 31-21 victory over Southern Mississippi in the PapaJohns.com Bowl.

Mauk started the Demon Deacons' season opener in 2006, but didn't make it through the game. He dislocated his passing shoulder and broke his passing arm while trying to recover a fumble, ending his season.
Doctors inserted a metal plate and eight screws in his upper right arm, and three anchors in his shoulder to repair the damage. He came to Cincinnati last season unsure whether he would ever play.
The arm got stronger as the season went along, and Mauk developed into one of the Big East's top passers. He threw for 3,121 yards and 31 touchdowns with only nine interceptions.
Mauk was hoping to hear from the NCAA this week about his eligibility request. Instead, it asked for more information about his injury.
"Yesterday they came back and said they need a letter from the Wake Forest doctor that did the surgery, saying that there's no way I could have come back and played the year I got hurt," Mauk said. "It's kind of positive because they didn't say no. At the same time, they haven't made a ruling yet."
UC's Mauk denied sixth year
CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior quarterback Ben Mauk's career is over.
The school announced this morning that Mauk's application for a sixth year of eligibility had been denied by the NCAA.
Mauk was redshirted as a freshman at Wake Forest and after suffering a devastating shoulder injury that caused him to miss all but one game of the 2006 season - and which led him to transfer to UC - he had a fantastic 2007, setting a program record with 31 touchdowns and leading the team to a 10-3 record.
He applied to the NCAA for a rare sixth year of eligibility, but the NCAA denied him the extension based on NCAA Bylaw 30.6.1.2, which states a redshirt year is considered within the control of the student-athlete and/or institution and does not constitute a missed participation opportunity.
One of the arguments made by UC was that Mauk did not have a choice whether to take a redshirt season at Wake Forest in 2003, and Wake Forest corroborated that statement.
