BCS predictions/discussion/Knock Em' Off

Shaker - I regret to say that Sagarin's #4 will NOT be the low and thrown out.

I'm sure of this because Colley Matrix has inadvertently tied their unreleased, yet updated computer ranking table to the "Add or Remove Games" form. If you add or remove NO games then this is the Before and After" ranking -
1 - LSU
2 - VT
3 - Georgia
4 - Missouri (!)
5 - Ohio State
6 - West Virginia

(And all teams are listed with their correct current records).

This would be a shift from the 11/24 ratings of ...
Top 25—Nov 26
[SIZE=-1] 1. WEST VIRGINIA
2. MISSOURI
3. OHIO STATE
4. GEORGIA
5. LSU
6. BOSTON COLLEGE
7. VA TECH

Bottom line the low to be thrown out would likely be Colley Matrix, Sagarin's #4 rank for Ohio State will remain part of the equation for BCS ranking.

Believe: OSU rides upsets to title game

Sunday, December 02, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Two days after Ohio State's first loss of the season, when the Buckeyes were No. 7 in the BCS standings, former OSU coach Earle Bruce had a feeling. The Buckeyes were five days away from playing Michigan, but already Bruce was looking big picture.
"We're not out of that national championship game by any means," Bruce proclaimed. "It can happen, it can happen as sure as I'm standing here. Remember who said it, because it's going to happen I think."
Three weeks and six upsets later, Bruce was right, and the Buckeyes are headed to New Orleans, returning to the national championship game. But this season has been so odd, the Buckeyes don't have an opponent yet.

Bob Hunter commentary: We will never know who was really No. 1

Sunday, December 2, 2007 7:29 AM
By Bob Hunter

Watching Pittsburgh beat No. 2 West Virginia last night, some firebug probably struggled with the urge to drag a couch into the street and start an impromptu celebration that Ohio State fans were once famous for. Or maybe not. It was a dreamy fall night for Buckeyes fans, a night to celebrate their almost-certain appearance in a second consecutive national championship game.
But there was something about it that just didn't seem right.
This wasn't a touchdown pass in the final minute to beat Michigan. It wasn't a sack of a Penn State quarterback when the game was on the line. This was more like, well, finding another beer in the fridge that you didn't know was there when the game you were watching went to overtime.

Pittsburgh's Steve Malinchak, center, and teammates celebrate a victory that knocked West Virginia out of a spot in the national title game.

Up next for OSU?

Can you believe this? The folks who run the Bowl Championship Series computer ratings certainly can't.

The last big Saturday of the college football season was pretty much like the rest of them -- nothing went to form.
No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia each lost and blew their chance to play for the national title.
That opened the door for No. 3 Ohio State to play in the game Jan. 7 in New Orleans. There are six candidates to face the Buckeyes: Georgia, Louisiana State, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Southern California and Oklahoma, the 38-17 winner over Missouri in the Big 12 title game.

Ohio State football
Team waits, celebrates, waits more

Sunday, December 2, 2007 3:58 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State players jumped for joy last night, yelling as yet another higher-ranked team lost and gave the Buckeyes a spot in the national championship game.

About 75 Buckeyes players and most of the coaching staff gathered in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to watch top-ranked Missouri meet Oklahoma and No. 2 West Virginia play Pittsburgh.
When Pittsburgh finished off its shocking 13-9 upset, the party began.
"Everybody was going crazy," fullback Tyler Whaley said. "Coach (Jim) Tressel got a little smile on his face. He wasn't jumping around, he didn't show us his vertical (leap), but I've been around him enough to know he was a happy man."
Ohio State is likely headed for its third national title game appearance in six years. On Jan. 7 in New Orleans, No. 3 Ohio State (11-1) should get a chance at redemption for an embarrassing loss to Florida in last year's championship.

The BCS Formula Implodes

toledoblade.com -- Readers find OSU criticism hard to take

A column, I believe, should do at least one of five things. It should make you laugh, make you cry, inform, entertain, or provoke thought. Of course, sometimes we just plain tick you off. That would best describe Friday morning's commentary on Ohio State and the BCS.

These Blade readers voice their opinions here. Many valid arguments, but the purpose of writing these columns is to increase the rags circulation, entertain, stir emotions, and maybe even report the news. Opinion columns like this are in every newspaper. It also comes from the likes of Mark May, Mike Lupica, and others. Listening to ESPN Sportscenter this morning, they are talking about the "best teams" playing aren't tOSU and Georgia as the top two in the BCS polls. Then who? LSU, USC, even Oklahoma? Are their records better? Are they better teams? That's a human polling grading factor that is completely subjective. Even the most simplistic high school league play has a points system which factors in out right wins, and wins to opponents based on their wins. Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing about this? Isn't this BCS system setup to weigh in all the factors? Doesn't the human poll factor come into play at the end of the season? We have to play by the system that is in place; we can't makeup at new system now because we don't like the choices that the system renders. WE will still be talking about it after we play the NC game. In the meantime, all the rhetoric is just selling rags and TV air time. Oh, and entertaining you and me!

:oh:

Tellshow has the top 4 projected thusly:

1 - Ohio State
2 - Virginia Tech
3 - LSU
4 - Georgia

Now, Tellshow is normally pretty good at these projections - but is far from infallible. Especially when the relative margins are small. Last week, for instance, Tellshow over-rated LSU's projected position in the coaches poll. At that time it resulted in a projected 5 spot being reduced to the #7 slot in the BCS.

This week, the margin for error in Tellshow's projection is razor thin.

Virginia Tech is projected to an overall lead above LSU of just 0.02 points in the computer polls. Also, the projected Coaches Poll and Harris Interactive rankings are flipped, with Coaches having VT at 2, LSU at 3, HI having LSU in the 2 spot.

As few as 7 Coaches votes, or 15 HI voters flipping from VT to LSU would overcome a 0.02 edge for VT in the computer polls.

If the computer polls are actually even closer, say 0.01, then all it needs is 4 Coaches and 7 HI voters to flip.

Highly Volatile.

In last week's Harris poll, LSU was clearly ahead of Va. Tech. In the coaches, most of them had Va. Tech ahead of LSU. It will depend on how many coaches switch their votes instead of just sliding 3-4-5-6-7 up to 1-2-3-4-5. There will be a ton of analysis about who voted for whom, since this week's poll results are revealed by voter.

I think more voters than the number he listed will switch their votes to put LSU ahead of Va. Tech when they think about 48-7, (which they should have before they sent in ballots last week).

I'll be surprised if it's not LSU at this point.

Anyone else find it disgusting that 11 people voted LSU as #1 in the USA Today Poll?

Even more laughable is the 2 people who voted Oklahoma #1.

Disgusting??? You should pay people to dis your team for a month before the game. You need to seek them out and buy drinks!

As I said earlier, I thought we still had a good shot at it. Seems Coach Bruce and I were of the same mind set and were right in our thinking. I just hope that the media continues to bad mouth us and disrespect us. It will only fuel the guys drive to shut them up and prove them wrong. Seriously though, who here actually thinks that these pundits/talking heads actually know crap about anything?!

PS, I've said it all along and will continue to say that DI-A needs to go to an 8 or 16 team playoff. Don't give me any excuses either (and that's exactly what they'll be is excuses)! Every other level of football from Pee-Wee to the Pro's have a playoff. Only NCAA DI-A doesn't! It can be, should be and must be done!!!

Tellshow has updated his site, and now has tOSU barely edging out LSU, with Va. Tech a distant third. He had severely underestimated the jump LSU would get in the human polls.
