Buckeye fans the world o'er can breathe a collective sigh of relief: Game day has arrived.
No more waiting. No more wondering. No more agonizing.
Well, almost.
The national-title matchup in college football -- between top-ranked Ohio State and No. 2 Louisiana State -- is scheduled for prime time tonight.
Instead of hand-wringing for hours, though, how about a little reading?

Glenn Dorsey returned for his senior season at LSU for a chance to win a national title.

NEW ORLEANS -- If Jim Cordle were sitting on his couch tonight watching the television instead of snapping the ball for Ohio State, he knows at least two players he would keep his eyes on as the Buckeyes take on Louisiana State for the national championship.
"I'm an O-line guy, so you know I have my preferences when it comes to what I'd watch," the Ohio State sophomore center said. "But I think (LSU's) Glenn Dorsey is the best defensive tackle in the country, and (OSU's) Vernon Gholston is the best 'D' end. I'd try to watch them as much as I could, because this game, it's going to be decided in the trenches."

5 keys to victory for Ohio State

Not to put any extra pressure on Ohio State tonight, but the result of the national championship game against Louisiana State could have a long-lasting effect on the perception of the Buckeyes' program, the Big Ten and Midwestern football as a whole. Of the nine national titles in the BCS era, eight have been won by southern or western teams: Tennessee, Florida State, Oklahoma, Miami (Fla.), Louisiana State, Southern California, Texas and Florida.
OSU's 2002 victory is the lone exception, and that will fade further into history if the Buckeyes lose tonight. A loss could threaten to turn the Buckeyes into college football's version of the Buffalo Bills. Like the Bills winning AFC titles, capturing Big Ten crowns could start to feel like a hollow accomplishment if the Buckeyes keep losing in the ultimate contest.

5 keys to victory for LSU

LSU has taken perhaps the strangest path ever to the national championship game. No other team has advanced to the title game with two losses. When the Tigers faced Tennessee for the Southeastern Conference title Dec. 1, playing tonight in New Orleans seemed out of the question.
But thanks to losses by Missouri and West Virginia later that day, the Tigers jumped to No. 2 in the BCS poll and will play Ohio State.
Because of their undeniable talent, because of the Buckeyes' flop in last year's title game against Florida and because of the perceived superiority of the SEC over the Big Ten, LSU is a 3 1/2 -point favorite.
Here are five things the Tigers have to do to prove the oddsmakers correct:

Rob Oller commentary: Win for Buckeyes really would be one for ages

Monday, January 7, 2008 3:06 AM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS -- Jim Tressel's fists are ready. Years from now, when some unassuming fan -- or assuming sports columnist -- reminds the Ohio State coach about last season's 41-14 national championship loss to Florida, the Vest will wind up and ?
"I hope 20 years from now it won't be brought up quite as often," Tressel said, smiling. "But if it is, I'll see Bob (Dispatch columnist Bob Hunter) at the retirement home, and when he brings it up to me at the checkerboard or shuffleboard, he might get an uppercut."
Notice that Tress doesn't doubt whether the loss will be brought up, just how often he'll have to hear about it.
Make no mistake, Ohio State losses -- specifically bowl game losses -- have the shelf life of dinosaur bones. On the flip side, the remnants of an especially big bowl game victory last as long, if not longer. They're like the big bang, reverberating through time, outlasting life itself. Many a happy OSU fan will take the 2002 national championship victory to the grave.

Bob Hunter commentary: Perception is reality until OSU changes it

Monday, January 7, 2008 3:17 AM
By Bob Hunter

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS -- Talk of "perception" got a swift backhand from just about every Ohio State representative asked about it before tonight's national championship game against Louisiana State. Fifth-year senior tackle Kirk Barton: "I don't really worry about perception. I worry about reality."
Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock: "I just don't get too involved with perception."
Coach Jim Tressel: "I think every time you have a chance to go out and compete you are adding to the creation of an impression. And when you're giving a positive impression, it only lasts until you give a negative one."
All of this perception-bashing is understandable. In the days leading up to a game of this magnitude, worrying about the "impression" of the program by a skeptical media or the "perception" of the program by the public would be a poor use of players' and coaches' time.

He doesn't get off blocks very well. He's a beast, I love him, and a great player, but he got trucked by Tebow last year and was having a lot of problems shedding the blocks this year.

I guess I kind of sounded pretty bad. Heh. I'm thinking of the PSU game where a fullback on Laurinaitis shut him down completely.

And yeah, Flynn is very mistake-prone. But besides Malcolm Jenkins and James Laurinaitis this team has butterfingers. A mass case of Braylonitis. I still want to see at least a pick. Maybe Jenkins can snatch one away from Early Doucet and take it to the house. I would need a change of pants if that happened.
Were we watching the same season?

And, uh, on the PSU game, it's hard to make an impact when you've got a fullback, tight end, and a guard all blocking you. PSU devoted their entire blocking scheme to making sure that #33 had two guys on him at at all times, can you blame them?

I need your help.

Friend of mine went to NOLA for the game. Saturday night he was at a Casino and some friendly barbs were thrown with LSU fans.

My friend called me from his cell phone, gave it to the Tiger fan, and he started talking junk to me. Funny stuff really, I wasn't expecting it.

Well he gave this guy my cell phone number and he has already left one message for me about how LSU is going to rip our hearts out etc....

I say we give this LSU fan some grief, and leave him some good ole buckeye stuff on his phone.

Who is in?

PM me for the number. (I won't be so low as to post it here)

mods- if this is out of line go ahead and delete.

Ohio State has been my favorite school since childhood. When I applied and was accepted, one of my wishes was that OSU would win a title while I was attending. I was excited last year. I really thought it was the year.

I have never been this nervous for something with which I am not involved. It's 7:38 AM, I haven't slept, and I have class in three hours.
