We actually had a rough time yesterday (better shooters targeting us than usual). I've flown with some other guys and stayed up there for 5-10 min at a time raining down hell on the masses below.
I've fully unlocked the assault class (though I prefer the m4a16), but you can do some remarkable damage as an advanced medic.

The MGs are simply too powerful for their mobility. The line of fire should not be that precise unless you are kneeling imo.
Plus while you reload your SMG or rifle clip, he has 3-8x as many bullets left in his clip.
The revive aspect is a lot of fun and an easy way to pile up points as well.

Is an m16 an smg? I always classified that as an assault rifle. In that category, I'm partial to the versatility of the m4a16. The m16 leaves me too vulnerable in close combat with the delay between bursts.
If SMG = uzi, ump, etc then... the SMGs are more deadly in extremely close combat, but everywhere else they don't compare to the MGs.

Is there a way to turn on automatic fire with the m16? This video seems to have full auto at times, unless, his bursts are just immediately after each one.

Having unlocked every weapon and used them all to some extent, best weapons in my opinion....
Medic - M60 (there is no doubt about that, and Dice is talking about changing the weapon...it could be the best in the game)
Assault - M416. Although this is one class where a lot of the weapons are similar (unlike the other classes). I will sometimes switch to the M16A2 in more wide open maps for better long range accuracy.
Engineer - AK74 or UMP. Although I do like using the G3 and Carl Gustav with explosion perk. "Hot Carl" is a great anti personnel weapon, and people are starting to complain about it.
Recon - I rarely snipe. If I had to I would pick the M24 or M95. Some do like the GOL. Instead of sniping I choose the Saiga or the G3 (the G3 is a great all around weapon).
For pistols - 1911, no doubt about it. Again, Dice is talking about changing the weapon.
Dice also mentioned they might change the anti aircraft vehicles. Helicopters are having big issues with teams that know what the heck they are doing.
BTW...worst gun in the game....M14. That thing sucks so much ass. If you want a challenge use that terrible weapon.
