Barry Bonds (Juiced Merge)

I thought I'd start a little debate.

Why does America hate the home run record holder until 20 years down the line?

When Ruth held it, fans and media hated the home run because it wasn't "real" baseball at the time. When Aaron broke the record, fans and media hated the fact he had 3000 more at bats than Ruth and wasn't a pure slugger not to mention he was African American. Now Barry has it and obviously fans and media hate the fact it's broke because of the roids issue and he's an angry sob.

It seems Amercan's hate the person that holds that record until 20 years after it's been broken. Will Barry be in that same situation (assuming ARod doesn't take it) 20-30 years from now?

The same applies to the single season home run record (see asterick *invented by Roger Maris).

I doubt anyone at any time is forgetting about Barry and this record, the main reason I think the memory will outlast the feelings people had before is how free information has become. Face it, as a kid you were shown videos of Babe Ruth and told hallowed storys, the facts were all but lost on him as a person except by people who knew him etc...

Aaron was a two-way story, I have heard many say that if Ruth had had as many at-bats as Aaron that record would have been well out of reach for anyone, but that's still not a valid argument and considering the era, a black athlete setting such a record is more what people recognize than anything else.

For Bonds, what's he got to make his story great? He's right in the middle of a scandal that has done tons of damage to the sport of baseball, there's information everywhere that is easily available that will continue to be that way, and his personality has shown, been caught on interviews, and the pictures of his throne in the locker room.

Bonds will most likely be seen as a dirtbag if someone doesn't come along and destroy his record before that time, which I believe will happen anyways.

what rule did he break?

Nothing about what Bonds has done that invalidates his record.

But I'm not breaking any rule either by not liking it. What he and Aaron did are apples and oranges. I haven't followed the quest and haven't watched the replay - nor will I. I simply have a genuine distaste for what has happened the same as I would if he was using an aluminum bat.

Now let's get the countdown started on A-Rod.

I'm happy Barry got the record obviously and I am happy Aaron taped a congrats to him. Aaron came out of this looking the best of anyone, and I'm sure he will accept my apology for my comments earlier in the thread. Like others have said I don't know why people get so worked up about this anyway, ARod will break the record in 6-7 years anyhow.

2 or 3 if we let him blatantly cheat also. I say he should get to bat from 2nd base.

He used steroids....I'm not sure why people keep stating that sentiment as if he wasn't breaking any rules and there was nothing in the baseball rulebook against roids....THERE WAS..it was in the collective bargaining agreement that steroids was a violation, however they had no testing policy in place

So, yes, technically he was breaking the rule by using steroids.

well Canseco says he has something on ARod so maybe it will be a moot point. Normally I would dismiss it but he was dead-on about McGwire......

I am curious about what he could have, I mean if he had something about A-Rod one would think he would have put it into his last book since you're talking about what is one of the best players in the game who is on one of the more popular MLB teams. Speculate all you want, but if he has something I don't think it's going to be as eye-opening as his first book.

Sid 'fucking' Bream.

Not a fan of Bonds, but he did have 445 dongs before he started going crazy. Over 500 swipes is amazing.

They all cheated. Pitchers, too (Clemens). Screw 'em all.

Why not sell two books instead of one?

And heck, baseball in itself has a long list of cheaters. It is part of the game, everything from the ol spit ball, corking bats and telescopes in centerfield to steal the catcher's signs.
heck, everyone smokes crack so it must be OK to do it?

though he is a dick he is the best baseball player of our generation.
:slappy: hardly. as was shown, he is a very good ball player but post 99 all of his accomplishments (and those would be the big ones, such as entering the 500/500 club, MVPs, HRs, Walks, OB%, etc.) are out the window. Bonds had one of the best eyes in baseball combined with one of the quickest swings, when he started taking roids he went from a top-10 player to a superhuman freak.

:roll1: Just look at Jr. in Cinci, w/o all of his injuries he would be chasing the record.. alot can happen in "6-7" years..
I'll bet Canseco is really a trustworthy source. Really. Trustworthy.
So far he hasn't been that far off..

Well, if you are going to say "these people are on steroids" a couple years after everyone is off of them then you are really opening yourself up for lawsuits. Not only that, he made one comment and A-Rods lawyers are already on his ass, I think the A-Rod juice will probably be more along the lines of he lives at whore houses and has 7 wives in 4 different countries.
