B1G CCG: Who defeats Whom? (Bet by noon on Nov 5)

How would OSU make it to the CCG if scUM were to beat the Bucks this year?

It would require tOSU win their other games, Penn State to lose all of their remaining games, and Wisconsin to lose to either Purdue, Illinois or Minny. A 3-way tie of 5-3 teams would go to tOSU since they would have defeated Wiscy and Penn State.

If tOSU beats TSUN, TSUN would probably need to win all of their other games to finish 6-2, and they would need Sparty to finish with 3 losses (since TSUN would lose a 2-way tiebreaker to Sparty and they'd lose a 3-way tie with Nebraska and Sparty at 6-2.

So even though TSUN is now 3-1 and tOSU is 2-2, tOSU is in better shape to reach the CCG. With the remaining schedules, needing a Penn State loss (or 2) is better than needing a Sparty loss (or 2).

I am dreading the fact that someday a situation will come up where no matter the result of THE GAME, tOSU and TSUN will play in the B1G CCG. Hopefully not until after I am dead, but it will happen. It will be the dumbest season in college football history.

The way things are shaping up, Hoke may get two chances to play Fickell this year.

Michigan has fallen very short this decade in regards to the rivalry to think it's to the point where osu fans wouldn't crave the chance to beat them twice. Bad on us.

Gordon Gee said something similar when the divisions were announced. I thought he was full of shit.

My opinion has nothing to do with the record in recent years. It has everything to do with the magnitude of our annual match up. If there is going to be a do over in the BTCG a week later then the first one was a complete waste of time.

The year we played Florida in the NC game there was sentiment for a rematch with UM. I wanted to play Florida, and I don't regret it despite the result. UM had their shot. They lost. The penance is you live with the result for an entire year. You don't get a second chance in a game that carries more weight than the first one.

My opinion will not change when UM finally beats us. THE GAME means something. At least it does until the first time we meet in the BTCG. We should be in the same division.

I'll go one-better: if there is ever a re-match in the BTCG, the first one was a waste of time. I don't care that it happens in the SEC, or in the NFL, or other leagues, sports, etc. Any re-match diminishes the value of the first game. If Ohio State makes it to the BTCG to play Michigan State, and wins, what importance was the first game? Why is the re-match more important? Just because it is labeled "The Big Ten Championship Game"? Just my IMO.

But the worst would be a situation like in 2006. I guess it isn't going to happen very often, but can you imagine if both teams have already clinched their divisions, going into the last game of the year? And I'm not specifically talking about Ohio State - Michigan (although, in a way, I am). It could be Penn State and Nebraska some year, or Indiana and Northwestern (). If both teams go into that game KNOWING that they are going to play again the next week, and this game is pointless, the game is likely to be boring. Yeah - I can see the home team trying to win their last home game for the seniors. But, well, whatever...

The folks willing to shit all over tradition might say that this situation could be fixed by moving all of the cross-division games into October - Gerry DiNardo has already suggested on BTN that they move The Game to much earlier in the season.

Don't shoot me, folks, I'm just the messenger. I think he needs to be slapped upside the head just for thinking about it.

I don't like the idea of playing them twice per year but I love the idea of beating them twice per year. The one thing diminishing the rivalry more than the divisional set up is the fact that they have sucked the past 4 years.

The solution is this: When two teams who have clenched their division play each other they receive a BYE that week. Then they play in the CCG, no rematch necessary.

So in a situation like 2006, THE GAME would have been a BYE, and the next week they would play in the CCG.

Exhibit A of this was between Florida and Florida State in 1996. FSU went undefeated, beating Florida 24-21 in the final game of the year to finish 11-0. As it happened though, the 2 then met in the Bowl season, where Florida tore them up 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl and won the National Title despite their only loss being...to Florida State the game before. Playing twice basically means winning the first game didn't count, because it's only the final result that matters, which to me is most unfair.
