The Big ten is reported to want to start nation wide talks to restrict freshmen from playing football and basketball.
as reported by the Maryland student newspaper.
"The Big Ten is hoping for support from its member institutions to begin a “national discussion” about ruling freshmen ineligible for football and men’s basketball, according to a document obtained by The Diamondback."
Probably is a non starter.

I'm assuming this is geared more toward basketball, as you see more impact freshmen there than in football usually. I'm also assuming this is something that would have to implemented across all P5 conferences. All it will result in are more kids taking the Brandon Jennings route to the NBA.

No where in the article is the author(s), source or form of the "the document" provided. Meh.

It looks like the argument the conferences are making (It does seem to be coming from PAC-12, but ACC, Big 12, and others are mentioned) is the case for 1 and done kids. Dean Smith wanted to reinstate the ban on freshmen playing as he believed a student athlete should have to prove himself in the classroom before he's given the privilege to play. A lot of kids don't care about school because a lot of them feel like they can just jump to the NBA after a year. They say freshmen have made up 36% of recent NBA drafts. If a kid actually has to stick around for a year (Or more) before he can play and make an impact, then he make take more consideration about where he goes to school.

This rule will not help that cause. Kids will choose to go overseas rather than waste away a year sitting on the bench at a school.

Edit to say that not ALL players will opt for the overseas route, as that's quite an undertaking, but I could see some of the elite ones doing that.

Out here they're saying the PAC got the ball rolling on this. Who knows.

Yeah, there seems to be some differing of opinion on who started the discussion. Of course, the Worldwide Leader posted that the B1G is the one that is considering it and didn't mention anything about the PAC12, Big12, or ACC in their title.
