Lesson: online car insurance info/quotes are not a good way to find the best deal. Get a referrals from people you know/meet locally and go see agents.
Lesson two: Franchised insurers can be a mixed-bag of rates/QoS, so you really have to call your agent. State Farm is arguably the biggest example of this. State Farm agents are not created equal.

jlb is lucky to have a good experience with State Farm where he lives. If my local State Farm agent was on fire I wouldn't cross the street to piss on him. I had both auto insurance and an inland marine policy with them years ago and they jacked my rates up so terribly in my second year I left them for Progressive.

Now I'm with Geico and have been very happy. It may sound like the commercial but I did save a bunch of money by switching, didn't have to under insure myself to do it, can restructure my policy a la carte online whenever I want to fit my budget, and am now enjoying a significant discount for being in the 5-10 year bracket for both safe driver (no accidents/no tickets) and customer loyalty.

Always thought those commercials were sort of funny; who switches when they didn't save money?

Word of caution about switching companies, though. Agents often "miss" violations in giving quotes. Either the customer forgets or misreports something, or the agent glosses over it. I saw and was annoyed by many co-workers who would deliberately misspell a name or address so a motor vehicle report wouldn't pick things up, and then offer a low rate, knowing that when underwriting hiked it up later, the customer would quite likely be stuck because they couldn't get their old rates back.

Reag, I'm starting up a new insurance company, based in Ohio, that provides coverage in all 50 states. Based on the info you've given me, I can give you a quote of $98/month for you and Mrs. Reag.

I don't have a checking account setup yet, but if you'll send me the first 3 month's premium in cash, I'll get a new policy activated today.
