Deliverance is more West Virginia type stuff.
“A Time to Kill” is technically set in Mississippi, but much more in line with what some parts of Alabama still exist.

Backwoods Bama? fortunately no. However in 1980 my long haired ( down to the middle of my back) hippie Yankee ass spent a week in Birmingham with a musical youth group I belonged to. I made the mistake of walking to a local store at night with two black friends. I was also wearing an OSU T-shirt. I genuinely feared for my ( and my friends) lives and swore I would never set foot in that state again .

Been to Birmingham, Montgomery, and Phenix City, AL. That state can get fucked. Met an overwhelming majority of just plain stupid people. Add college football knowledge and if it wasn't SEC SEC SEC or one of Roll damn Tide or War Eagle they didn't know shit.
