Atlanta Falcons (Official Thread)

did it pay off with more offensive production than last year? no. We played tougher teams
did it pay off with a better record than last year? no. See teams comment above
did it pay off with a better performance in the playoffs than last year? no. I'm not going to accept playoff critques from Cleveland fans - ever.
We got in and gave it our best shot - we are in a better position to do so next year because JJ is a Falcon).

how exactly has it paid off?

It paid off because we returned to the playoffs and have a dynamic weapon for years to come. He had 1000+ yards and 8 touchdowns and he missed a couple of games.

He isn't going to regress - he's infinately more valuable that the #22 pick this year and he has a year of rapport with Matt Ryan.

The entire Browns thread is littered with people who want to take Blackmon. If you select him are you'd essentially be seeking similar production as Jones, yes?

atlanta's strength of schedule for last year was harder than this year. atlanta had the fewest games against teams with 9+ wins. a tougher schedule is false.

julio jones simply isn't compared to the #22 pick this year. he's compared to the sum of the 5 players cleveland got for trading that pick. coincidentally, he and greg little weren't all that far apart statistically this year.

so again, atlanta regressed in every metric that matters from last year to this season, and were actually better statistically when he didn't play. so, atlanta gave up a ton of draft picks for a guy they perform better without. so, how exactly did this pay off?

There is no pundit, talking head, NFL Exec or opposing player/coach who has been publically critical of the Jones Trade. None.
When he sat we beat the Panthers, Lions and Titans. Not exactly a murders row (at least from a defensive standpoint) Had he played and caught another 3 TD's would you have been satisfied?

He's not considered a bust and with he and Roddy locked up for the next 4 years, Atlanta has to make zero investments in WR for the forseable future.

Maybe the team should have used his compensation to lock up more offensive linemen to protect Matt Ryan? Persue additional secondary in free agency? I don't know?
For the first time in the history of the franchise we've made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years. The results haven't been good in the playoffs - but they will come.

The front office made a prudent investment and Cleveland said yes because they have significantly bigger areas of concern than we do.

This is a perfect summation of the point I am making. Maybe this guy reads this board. Read this thoroughly and then realize why the trade has not, and likely will not pay off for atlanta.

also, by the by, Atlanta's SOS for the year was .488. The SOS of the 3 teams Atlanta beat without Jones was .520. so that's another excuse you can toss aside.

That article and your argument is based on the fact that the Browns got the better of the deal.
When will this be realized? You're still drafting in the top 10 in 2012. Do we have to wait till 2013 to get the results? 2014? If your draft picks are busts or are out of the NFL in 4 years, could you still make this argument?

no. the argument isn't that cleveland will get the better of the deal. the argument is that atlanta would have been better served to not make the deal at all given how their team was really comprised. the statistical evidence thus far shows that to be true.

as for who will win the trade between cleveland and atlanta, some could argue that the production of greg little and phil taylor alone would be a wash with what jones did this year, not counting the other picks. but that's not the crux of the issue anyway.

Jones is better than all the players the Browns took, Period. He had about 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns, and he missed about 4 games. Phil Taylor from Baylor, by all accounts, sucked. Greg Little scored 2 touchdowns. Maybe you should focus on a QB for this year's draft instead of looking at a trade where Atlanta got a superstar, and the Browns got arguably nobody significant. Falcon fans shouldn't have to defend themselves against Browns fans.

Just sayin'...

That simply is not true...at all. 59 Tackles and 4 sacks out of a rookie DT is quite solid production. He received pretty solid reviews for his rookie season. He had his ups and downs, but saying he "sucked by all accounts" is patently false. It's also a little early to be saying Greg Little is "nobody significant", considering he caught 61 balls in a horse abortion of an offense. I have serious doubts Jones' production would have been significantly better had he ended up with the clowns. I'm not ready to say either team got the "better deal", but maybe you should limit the sweeping claims without checking your facts. Just sayin'...
