Assistant HC/Secondary/CB Coach Tim Walton (Official Thread)

https://www.si.com/college/ohiostat...mbs-will-not-return-to-buckeyes-staff-in-2022

I had really hoped Kerry Coombs would have stayed on as a DB/CB coach; but, I have to admit that I do believe Tim Walton might just be an upgrade.

The availability of black coffee and Red Bull in the WHAC is certainly benefitting by Walton’s position.

As a DB/CB coach, I think Coombs was in the team picture for those best in the business. But when he was DB/CB coach, Schiano was running the overall scheme and the secondary was just a piece of the puzzle. I think that’s the primary difference. He probably would have been fine in this scheme too… just as long as he didn’t have to worry about creating the scheme and running it.

That said, I’m very pleased with the overall results on this side of the ball. Walton is doing a great job.

Hard to watch Burke's startling regression and not attribute a large chunk of it to Walton. Maybe there was more going on behind the scenes, but the overall play of the CBs was shaky this year. In his defense, the depth was non-existent due to past recruiting failures

Anybody think maybe Tim Walton may be on the hot seat?
I'd say the Defensive staff gets a pass for the most part considering it's a whole new staff learning a brand new system. That said, the corners better learn to play offense in this system instead of running into the fracking WRs and play the ball. They are too good to play that way. If they are finding themselves always in a trail position, maybe they should be playing other players. We should have been right up in michigans jocks all day and stayed there. Off the ball and bailing then find themselves missing tackles and still in a trailing position can't stand.

Safeties were the most egregious yesterday though completely out of position and missing plays all over the field. Brutal

I don't know why Knowles was playing so aggressive. That was the craziest thing I have seen. Reminded me of Don Brown.

I mean the one drive Knowles wasn't aggressive was when SCUM had their lone clock eating TD drive. It felt like the plan was to absolutely shut down SCUM's run game and make McCarthy beat you with his arm. Considering McCarthy was absolutely terrible when throwing against man coverage all year, Knowles went with the logical gameplan imo. Like the overarching plan very nearly worked. OSU got a lot of crucial stops in the first half and a few in the second that should've resulted in the Buckeyes being up something like 42-24. If OSU goes up 35-10 or something like that at half time the wheels probably start to come off for SCUM.

Yeah the lack of aggressive O really put OSU back. I don't know when Day became so conservative. It's weird. His first season he was blasting on all cylinders.

He killed Clemson by being aggressive. Then Alabama happened.

It seems like he froze up starting last year.

It may well be a CJ thing.

I place a lot of the offensive woes on a lack of execution rather than play calling imo. There were some BRUTAL drive killing drops Saturday. Stover alone had two awful drops. Saturday happened because of a lack of execution all around imo. Like I knew the CBs were a problem but I never thought they were bad enough to make JJ look as good as he did. And he didn't even look that good when throwing lmao. You or I could've completed some of the passes JJ completed.

Walton better get the CBs right next year because they're probably at least 50% of the reason this was a loss.

Hard to fault him IMO.

The only corner with 1st round potential IMO is Jordan Hancock.

Yes Burke played well last year but he struggled late in the year too. He wasn't shut down last year either.

The corner depth is finally improved after the room was depleted around 2018. Having said that if there's an elite corner in the Portal we should look into them.

We could really use a good corner, probably 2 OL and a QB.
