Arkansas State @ tOSU, Sat Sep 10, Noon ET on BTN

“For us it’s business as usual, it doesn’t matter who the opponent is, whether it’s one of the top teams in the country or what have you,” Jones said in the Sun Belt conference media availability. “It’s about how we manage our business on a day-to-day basis and our routine and how we prepare for our opponents. It just happens to be an opponent that’s one of the best in the country. One thing is when you play a high-level opponent, your mistakes that you make are magnified. So your margin of error is a lot slimmer and a lot of the mistakes that we made Saturday night, if we make those same mistakes against Ohio State, they’re gonna turn into explosive plays, and negative yardage football plays and possibly turnovers generated. So, again the level of your opponent your mistakes are magnified, but for us, it’s just working to be the best football team that we can possibly be each and every day and you know, no more no less.”

Why has it taken so long to induct Shawn Springs into tOSU Athletics HOF?

Second Games: History, Trends, and Coincidences

When the Buckeyes beat Penn State on Halloween in 2020, the game was a first among 2nd-games-of-the-season in Ohio State history, but not for the reason you might think. As near as I can tell it is the THIRD latest 2nd game the Buckeyes have played. The only question is whether the 2nd game of the 1891 season is alone in first place or if it shares the honor with a game in 1890.

The first football game ever played by The Ohio State University was a 20-14 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on May 3rd, 1890. The second game played that year did not occur until November first, a 0-64 shut-out at the hands of Wooster. As 2nd games go it was forgettable (I've asked @BB73 about that game, but he doesn't want to talk about it. I think one of his grandchildren was injured in that loss.) If we regard it as the 2nd game, it is by far the most points Ohio State has ever given up in the 2nd game of any season. But was that blow-out loss the 2nd game of the 1890 season? As it was a different school year than they were in for the first game on May 3rd, it was a different team. Some therefore insist it was not the 2nd game of the 1890 season, but rather the first game of the 2nd season played in 1890. If that's true, then the answer to "When was the first undefeated season in Ohio State history?" is 1890, as that first season ended at 1-0. Also true if we take the May 3rd game to have been a 1-game-season is that the 2nd game of the 2nd season that year was played on November 14th (a 0-14 blanking at the hands of Denison). That game was also notable for being the first Ohio State game NOT played on a Saturday (it was Friday). The 2nd game of 1891 was also played on the 14th of November (a 26-0 victory over Kenyon), so those two games can be thought to be tied for the latest 2nd games in Buckeye history.

Circling all the way back to the original point, the notable thing about the victory over Penn State in 2020 is that it is the only time in their history the Buckeyes have allowed more than 24 points in a second game of the season and still won the game. The Buckeyes are 0-8 in 2nd games in which they have allowed more than 25 points (or 0-7 if you don't count the loss to Wooster in 1890 as a 2nd game).

In fact, until beating Miami (dead program, not Fredo) 36-24 in 2010, Ohio State had never won when allowing more than 21 points, and the only time they'd ever won when allowing 21 was in the 2nd game of the 1942 season. The closest they ever came to winning while allowing more than 21 in a 2nd game (before 2010) was when they tied Colgate 23-23 in 1923.

Sadly, the next time that Ohio State won while allowing more than 21 in a 2nd game was the very next year, a forgettable 27-22 "victory" over Toledo.

The Buckeyes have run hot and cold in second games for the last 9 years. Four of the second-game opponents in that time have scored 25 or more points (Buckeyes are 1-3 in those games). Against the other five second game opponents in that span, the Buckeye defense has held the opponent to either 1 score or has shut them out. The 42-0 blanking of the Bearcats in 2019 was the last shut-out posted by the Silver Bullets in a second game (or any game for that matter). Tomorrow will be day 1099 since that last shut-out.

Excellent read, thanks for sharing that. I particularly enjoyed the @BB73 comment. I laugh because I got recruited by Wooster and they touted themselves (somewhat in jest) as the last Ohio team to beat OSU. Until that visit, I had no idea about that game.

Anyways, really hoping we don't have a Game 2 hangover and let up in this one. We should blast these guys if we're focused. Is it game day yet?

“They're all getting reps and trying to get better. At the end of the day, when you're a backup quarterback, you're one snap away,” Day said. “And sometimes that doesn't feel that way. But you have to be mature enough. C.J. was in that boat in the past, almost every quarterback has been in that situation. So what you can't do is all of a sudden find yourself in a game and be like, 'Wow, I wasn't quite prepared for that,' or, 'The game's moving faster than I expected.' You can't do that. And that's going to be the challenge.

“So whenever they have an opportunity to get in the game and play, they gotta be competitive excellence just like everybody else. And I know they're working hard to prepare for that moment.”

“WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN THE GAME FIRST, AND THEN WE'LL GO FROM THERE. BUT YEAH, WE WANT TO START GETTING MORE AND MORE GUYS IN THE GAME. YOU KNOW, GUYS DESERVE TO PLAY."– RYAN DAY

“No matter who you play, we have to play the same way, period,” Day said this week. “When you have that mindset going into a season, that's different than like you're saying where it's like, ‘Okay, I gotta get up for this game. But then over here, I can take a deep breath.’ We cannot do that. You do that. That's how you get yourself set up (for failure).

“That's why the theme this year has gotta be competitive stamina. Bring it every single week, no matter who you're playing, whether it's the No. 2 team in the country, No. 1 team in the country or somebody that's not ranked.”

After scoring only 21 points last weekend, there is plenty Ohio State can improve upon this week. And the Buckeyes intend to play the Red Wolves with the same intensity and physicality they demonstrated against the Fighting Irish.

“We got to treat everybody as if we're playing the best team, and I think we can’t set our standard low,” said Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau. “I think every game we respect and treat every opponent like it's the best team we're gonna play or it's our last game we're gonna play. And we're doing the same thing we did against Notre Dame in the film room, trying to study. And I think there's no time to take your foot off the gas. I think all gas, no brakes and just making sure we know our plays and we're playing Buckeye ball.”

Just sayin': That's easier said than done. I don't think there ever has been a college football team that was "up" for all 12 gamers on their schedule. However, the great teams still find a way to win even when they aren't playing at their best.
