Arizona State Sun Devils (official thread)

Mill avenue used to be really nice back in the 90s. What happened?
Oh God. When I first joined the Air Force, I was stationed out at Edwards AFB in Southern California. My buddy was from the Phoenix area (Chandler) and his sister went to ASU. We'd occasionally drive down to Phoenix over long weekends and would usually hit Mill Ave on Saturday night. I have never seen anything like it. Wall-to-wall 10/10's wearing Daisy Dukes and little else. This was 1997. 90% of them are probably soccer moms with nicotine addictions and Zoloft/Buspar prescriptions now.

Oakland-lite?
This comments in this Reddit post tell most of the story. My two cents was even before the pandemic is was becoming overrun with homeless people, increased thuggery, all the old fun spots hand changed hands, House of Tricks which was a really nice fine dinning spot shut down. The days of seeing 10/10's in Daisy Dukes ended a long time ago. The last time I was there I didn't see any attractive women and the ones that had potential were all weirded out, tatted up pink hair with nose ring types. Downtown Gilbert and old town Scottsdale are the places to go now along with the Roosevelt Row near downtown Phoenix though that's a more arty gentrified area. That area too has been plagued with fights and shootings. The Westgate center on the west side there at the stadium/arena had potential but it's too far out and there's too many ghettos nearby. It gets overrun with unsavory types.

It closed by 1997 but my first duty station was George AFB outside of Victorville. We used to go to LA to party. You could get a cheap room in Santa Monica and make a weekend out of it, beach during the day and then the strip at night.

ASU is a complete dumpster fire. Speaking of which if any of you all have been down to Tempe and Mill Ave in recent years it's turned into a bizarro world dystopia. I can't imagine the goings on on campus is much different, most likely a reflection.
I was at the BW3's on campus, Rural Road, about a month ago killing time and eating lunch. You'd expect to see some serious talent down there, at least from when I was going to school there 10 years ago, but no. Rooster's on Olentangy is a lot better all the way around.

I had another buddy whose uncle was a travelling sales rep for Labatt's that had an apartment in Westwood, so we went and stayed down there a couple times when he was out of town and partied in LA. We were actually blocks away the night Biggie was killed. Had some great times being stationed out there.

The trip up Hwy 395 up to Reno is a nice drive too along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. Then you're close to Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Palm Springs and even Tijuana is doable.

Antonio Pierce gets show-cause penalty for Arizona St. violations

i

Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce was slapped with an eight-year show-cause order because of violations that occurred when he was an assistant coach at Arizona State, the NCAA announced Thursday.

Most of the violations were related to what the NCAA referred to as a "scheme" orchestrated by Pierce to circumvent restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pierce facilitated impermissible recruiting contact with 35 prospects, including "tryouts, football facility tours and entertainment." It was also determined he directed an assistant to engage in tampering with a player enrolled at another school and traveled out of state to observe and meet with prospects during a recruiting dead period.

"In arriving at an eight-year show-cause order for Pierce, the panel emphasized his role as the ringleader in orchestrating the recruiting violations," according to the report from the NCAA.

In the event Pierce is hired by an NCAA school during the show-cause order -- which runs until Oct. 2, 2032 -- he would be suspended for the first football season and would be allowed no contact with any of the program's coaches or players during that period.

During the investigation, Pierce provided "false or misleading information" and was unwilling to provide his financial records, according to the report. One ASU staff member told the NCAA that Pierce "did not fear the potential consequences for NCAA violations due to the financial security provided by his self-proclaimed wealth."

"Pierce used his position of authority to pressure staff members into engaging in violations, often by instilling fear that they would lose their jobs if they did not follow his orders," the report says.

The NCAA also issued a five-year show-cause order for former ASU football analyst Anthony Garnett, who participated in the violations. Garnett would face a one-season suspension if hired during the next five years.

Just sayin': It does take forever for the NCAA to complete their investigation and finalize the penalties, etc.
