That seems like a better question for somebody at Google than for me, since it's reported that they already built the app and submitted it to Apple. It is just awaiting approval.
Which reveals the actual hangup:

Apple's feud with Google, not Google's software development/support.

Why should they spend/waste time building a app for ios? If you want a device that runs google maps, you know what you should be getting.

Advertising $....think about it. With how many people upset about the Apple Maps, if you come out with an app, you will have those people download the google maps app. Which means more advertising. Makes complete sense for Google to have an iOS maps app

Well, sure. I bet they'll hang on to the GMaps app for a while to let their own native app get a bit of a foothold, and then finally approve it. Not saying that's right, or fair, but in the meantime - the web app is out there.

My comment was about Google building something more than the skinned web app that you can download. A full fledged application, not their web app.

Gotcha. You're right, Google has no reason to do that.

Their web apps are pretty slick and most of them have better icons than their App Store counterparts.

Looking at upgrading to an iPhone (finally), but really not looking forward to being bent over by Verizon (or AT&T) with their plan prices. My mom and I used to be on Sprint way back when they first started their cell phone business (she's been with the company since the United Telephone days, so it was kind of an automatic to go with Sprint's wireless), but gave up as soon as the first contract period was over because the coverage was absolute shit and switched to Verizon and both of us haven't looked back. Sprint's unlimited everything plan pricing is very enticing (savings of $50-80/month), but I've heard constant mixed reviews when it comes to coverage. Living in Florida and looking at their coverage map gives me some pause because I do sometimes like to wander out into the wilderness preserves and other more remote areas and I still get very good coverage with Verizon in those areas whereas Sprint has them listed as off-network or no coverage at all. Even their coverage through some major travel routes looks spotty (I also like to travel pretty frequently). Anyone have an iPhone on Sprint that wouldn't mind telling me what their coverage experience has been like?

Not very likely that you'll find may Florida VZ or Sprint customers on BP.

Good friend switched from AT&T to Sprint a couple years ago with his iPhone. He's in rural Ohio, south of Canton. Coverage there is about as good as AT&T or even better, but with more 3G areas than AT&T has. But others in that area say VZ has much better coverage.

Don't care about Florida specifically, as I know a few with Sprint here, just trying to get a wider scope of coverage since my mom is in Indiana and travels to Ohio frequently, and I also travel regionally and back up north on a somewhat regular basis. I noticed there are several spots along US30 that are off-network roaming, and stuff like that may be a major factor in not switching if its really that spotty along routes like that. I'm a little concerned with the spotty coverage down here in areas I like to go roaming, but a little more concerned with my mom's coverage than mine. The joys of being the go-to tech person for her even when we're 1k+ mi. apart...

Had to return my 5...dropping service all over the place, 5-10 times an hour. And of course the apple stores are sold out. So who knows how long it'll be until I get a new one :(
