Apple iPad, Android, other tablet displays

For me it has almost all of the limitations of a mobile device, with only slightly more portability than my laptop.
How much does your laptop weigh? For me that's a big thing. I can toss this thing in my camera backpack without noticing it. I can't add a 4-5 lb notebook and do that.

It doesn't go in your pocket, so it's not as useful for incognito browsing, but 1.5 lbs is extremely light, just like an ultralight laptop like the macbook air except a lot cheaper.
I might eventually come around to it, but I can't imagine it taking the place of any devices that I currently use. It's an extra toy.
I would agree with that. I think the thought process is that it's an extremely slick toy to do your basic entertainment needs. Browsing, email, music, movies, photos, social networking, office.

If I'm sitting on the couch or riding somewhere, I'd rather use a thin screen than bother with a bulky & hotter laptop or a tiny phone.

It would never replace my desktop & heavy computing needs, but I think most of america spends a lot of time doing frivolous or basic computing.

I will not run out and buy this. But in a year or two, it could be a good stopgap when thinking about a computer upgrade.

What is it? It looks like my phone mixed with a lap top?
if they built a flat keyboard into the inside of that leather cover, then they'd really have something. I'm guessing someone will develop that in the next year.

Griffin and Belkin are on the case, I'm sure.

Apple has been very good at staying out of the accessories market overall and letting other companies do the R&D for minimal gain.

I don't know what Apple charges for the license on the 30-pin connector component and the "Works with iPad" graphic, but I'm sure whatever they make off of it is way more than what they'd get if they made the shitty accessories themselves. At least, it's been a winning formula for the past 10 years with iPods, so no need to change now.

At least they have 8-9 months to clarify the difference between the two, but I'm still looking forward to the xmas horror stories where grandma bought her grandson a second ipod (touch) instead of the ipad.

Here's the reason I said only "slightly" more portability. If I had one of these I'd be carrying it in my messenger bag - just like my laptop. Yes, it's lighter. If the battery life that's being advertised, it would also have an advantage over my laptop in that I probably wouldn't need to carry a cord with it except when I travel. For me though portability doesn't come down to weight, it comes down to size. In the end, I'm still carrying it the same way I'd be carrying my more powerful laptop.

My "laptop" is nearly 22" end-to-end if I flip the screen out 180-degrees. Upright in a normal, usable position, it's 11" deep, 10" tall, and well over a foot wide. It's not even usable in the coach section of an airplane, it's too big. If I actually sit it in my lap, I'll have to go to the hospital and be treated for 2nd degree burns on both my thighs. It has a battery life of about 45 minutes ...

I haven't carried my laptop anywhere in three years, at least not unless I knew I'd be gone for more than a week.

Laptops haven't been "laptops" for over a decade. They're all portable desktops now. Netbooks are the new laptops, and Apple just released one thats best in class.

That battery life feature is a pretty huge one however, not to mention the quality of screen it comes with... Especially when facing off against the budget market with no vaio or macbook pro screens.

It would be great to know you could watch a movie and still go most of the day without being tied down to a wall for awhile.

All that's true - but I didn't own a laptop until they became portable desktops. I've just never been a fan of having a computer that's not good enough to be my main computer.

And for me, it doesn't matter what size computer I have - if I try to use it on a plane I'll end up huffing all over it from motion sickness.

I'm not trying to speak for the mass market here - the thing just doesn't fit my needs. I'd rather have a portable desktop and a truly mobile device than something in between that carries few to none of the features I find most useful in the devices I use now.

They need to fix me up with a 120GB iPhone. Everybody else can have their iPad.

Curious that the iPad doesn't support Flash. But with newspapers starting to charge for web content it looks like it will help save editorial content/newspapers. I would still like to see Flash on it though. I would want to be able to watch movies and Lady GaGa videos! :tongue2:

It'll have Flash support by the time it hits the street.

Not that I care though, since I think Flash is the worst technological invention of the past 10 years, and Web developers that use Flash should be clubbed over the head.

There are not enough four-letter words in the English language for me to properly convey how much I loathe Flash.

It's OK for certain applications, IMHO

So exactly what are the benefits to this tablet over a netbook...I mean obviously it's touchscreen. But is there anything else?

I heard it doesn't even have a true operating system. That basically it's just a giant Ipod Touch. But this was coming from an avowed Apple PC Hater.
