Apartments in Columbus

Ok so landed a new job and am going to be looking for an apartment in Columbus. New(ish) graduate working with new graduate type income so not looking for anything spectacular..1 bedroom, 1 bath..covered parking of some sort would be preferred and obviously not in an area where I'm dodging bullets on the regular. I'll be working around Easton so I'd prefer to be in that northeast quadrant there..but am not opposed to being closer to downtown.

Just thought I'd check and see if anyone knew of some good spots since I've got to finish this search rather quickly.

There's a lot of new places in New Albany, not too far from Easton. From Easton south and west to Downtown are some of the worst neighborhoods in the state. I have a friend who lives in the Villages of Wagner park...seems pretty decent. Their smallest goes for right like $650 or $700.

There may also be some places in Gahanna worth looking at, but I don't know of any firsthand.

I would recommend looking at Westerville or Gahanna first. Both are right on the 270 loop which makes access to Easton convenient (minus the traffic which will be a bitch around Easton no matter where you are coming from). You should also be able to find plenty of places in the $600-$800 price range, which is about as cheap as you can get around Columbus without really slumming it. I don't have any suggestions for specific apartment complexes though.

I live in Gahanna, at the Vistas about .5 mile from the corner of Hamilton & Morse. It takes us about 5 minutes with traffic to get to Easton. Our rent here for a 1 bedroom 1 bath is $675 (for a 2nd floor with vaulted ceiling in Living room, downstairs I believe is like $650 or at least it was last summer). The people here are great, a lot of young people live here. The renting company has been great to work with if something stopped working. Check them out. They are pretty nice apartments too.

I would stay away from apartments on the east side of 71 and inside 270...not exactly the safest/smartest area to live in

Oh and Congrats!

Ok sounds good so far..does anyone have any personal suggestions about what % of income you should spend on rent. Hear a lot of different answers on the subject really and obviously some personal preference is involved..but being that people here would have a pretty good grasp about the cost of living overall I figured i'd leave it open to suggestions.

Check out the Lifestyle Communities in New Albany or Gahanna. The wife and I lived at The Farms of New Albany for a year before moving to Cleveland. Some of the apartments are less than 3 years old and very nice.

Some perks that I found while living there: nice pool area, tons of recent college graduates liver there, very nice workout facility (especially for being an apartment facility), The Goat (nice bar in the middle of community), maintenance crews are very responsive, plenty of things to do nearby (Roosters, Subway, Average Joe's, Rusty Bucket, Kroger, Giant Eagle, Lucky Yee Chinese Restaurant, etc.), and the the leasing girls are usually pretty hot.

Quit being a pussy and live where it's cheap. Someone tries to fuck with your shit, you fuck them up. Send a fucking message.

^^This. Buy a good handgun and you are ready to go. When I was living in Columbus and first got divorced, I found a place (was called Racoon Creek at that time) that had drug dealers and hookers living there, but the rent was only $425 a month that included water and sewage. No one messed with me and I was there 2 years before I had saved up enough to buy a house. Just keep to yourself and give people the crazy eye when you are walking around the place and you will be fine.

A beard goes a long way. I pay 400/month rent. Two bedroom. Think about that.

I currently live at Farms of New Albany and love it! I also looked at the Gahanna LC, but an apartment opened at the New Albany location first. Like Smitty said, you are close to pretty much everything. I work by the airport and it only takes me 15min during rush hour to get there.

I used to live at Sugar Run in New Albany, which is not priced high at all and very nice apartments. There are a ton of apartments in Gahanna around the Hamilton Rd and Morse Rd intersection. There is also a pretty nice Apartment complex right by Easton off of Morse. It's back by the COTA bus stop and Sakura Japanese steakhouse. I also looked there when finding an apartment.
