Any other coffee snobs out there?

Caribou is right across the street from where I work, and since the basic lights and darks tend to be a bit less bitter than Starbucks, I prefer it to Starbucks. But I only get the large $2 dark. The $4 drinks are for when I've got a coupon for a freebie. In a pinch, any fresh-ground/brewed will do.

Caffeine has the opposite effect on me...it mellows me out. But I still get migraines if I don't get my daily dose.

I can't stand most of the "high-end" coffees. My girlfriend is a coffee snob. Me. I just switched from the so-called stay-fresh plastic Folgers tubs to the metal Maxwell House cans. I think that the coffe in the stay-fresh tubs was going bad faster than the metal cans. Despite storing them in the refirgerator.

Coffee in South Africa is much more European. Instant coffee is not as big as back home. Coffees are stronger. People often like to choose the beans and grind them in store, which you often can do right at the shelf by yourself.

There is a chain of coffee shops here called Seattle Coffee, which originally was part of the Seattle's Best Coffee but was sold on after the Starbucks buy-out in the USA. The local chain has South Africa and Mauritius.

They have excellent coffee and use a lot of special African blends. We like that a lot.

All in all, though, I am partial to Maxwell House and the like back in the US, just like Dryden. I prefer the lighter roasts and flavor of just black coffee back home. But over time I have come to like the exotic local blends as well.

there are so many different types of great coffee out there but I will stick to StarBucks.

I take it in my thermos to work every day, even though my employer (Chase) offers free coffee (typical industrial blend). I am so addicted to that stuff. Everything else tastes "thin" by comparison.

Is that the one in Granville? I drove past it when I was in town for THE GAME, and couldn't believe how big it was. Nothing that size in Georgia. All the babes who gave me freebies and samples have moved on. Sigh.

I am a coffee snob. IMO the best quote ever on coffee is from Airplane...

Coffee should be dark and strong and very bitter. This is one reason I like Starbucks, espresso in general, Staufs, etc.... I prefer it straight up.

IMO, Caribou is bad. Very bad. I refuse to go back. Seattles best is probably as good a coffee as I have purchased in the store.

Best coffee for the buck has to be White Castles. The rest of their food not so much. In my sr business seminar at OSU, the president from White Castles told us that one of their business strategies was to have very good coffee and that people will tend to buy something else while they are there.

IMO, in Columbus the coffee shops from best to worst are.

1. Staufs
2. Starbucks
3. Cup O Joe
4. Mozarts (at least their Espresso machine is very good)
5. White Castles
6. Caribou

but thats just me.

Considering purchasing a french press (er, freedom press) since I hear it makes better coffee and it seems like a nice little touch of extra production value for guests. Good plan or no?

Inexpensive and the best way to have control over quality of coffee.

In order of importance while making coffee is:

1. Quality of Water. if there is crap in the water, there is crap in the coffee.
2. Filter being clean.
3. Temperature of water. Hot, but not boiling. Don't want to burn the coffee.
4. Quality of the bean and the ground. Most decent coffee shops will ask you what you use to make the coffee and will grind accordingly.

My brother purchased one about a month or so ago. At first he made some of the worst coffee ever in it. But now that he's had it for a while and learned how to use it properly he can make a damn good cup of joe.

So, stuck at the Mother out Laws for the weekend and Christmas, which is in rural BFE. The morning coffee is just atrocious (Folgers) and there is no coffee places anywhere close to go. The best possibility is Speedway. I am already having headaches. At this point in time I would slum it for a cup of Dunkin......

I love a good cup of fresh brewed dark roast shade grown organic fair trade coffee I used to drink a few cups a day, but cut back to 1 cup a day a few months ago. Now, I'm only drinking one cup a week - on Sunday morning at the locally owned coffee shop a few blocks from my house. There are literally 3 Starbucks within a 1/4 mile radius from the local coffe joint.

Jesus - old post. I drink about a half pot a day now. Love my 'home brew'.

Bri: if the coffee is bad, either double the amount of grounds in each batch, or get decent grounds and a French press. :)
