Any golfers out there?

So I am thinking about buying a new set of irons. I am 6'4'' and the set I have now are 25 years old and my dad (5'10) bought them. Does anyone have any advice on how good irons to get or where to get started? Also is there a certain lie i need to go with or do I have to get fitted to be able to tell?

I'm a casual golfer and I score like it, but if you're going to invest in new clubs find someone who will measure your swing and build the shafts to suit you.

Might not help, depending on your ability, but it definitely can't hurt. :biggrin:

Go get fitted by someone who knows what they are doing. Ask around locally but the best guy I found down here works at an Edwin Watts.

I can't express in words how important properly fitted clubs(for your size and swing) are. You could drive yourself nuts thinking the issue is with your swing (and all the compensating that follows) when its really poorly fitted clubs for your swing.

If you have been playing with 25 year old clubs fitted for a 5'10" guy you are going to be very pleased with the results.

You used to be able to visit the actual factory and get swing analysis and such. Not sure if they still do.

My dad actually makes clubs and he orders shafts, heads, etc from golf works. He's been using them for about 4 years I believe. He ordered my titelist knock off irons from there and I love them.

When I lived in GA, while playing at a course in this backwoods town...Cochran, I believe...Two Canadian guys were waiting with us to tee off, and asked where we were from. When we told them Newark, Ohio, they were dumbfounded. They planned a golf trip down to FL and back up to Canada, and the last place they were stopping was The Golf Works. It was like the time I ran into the Longaberger chicks on a plane and they acted like I was a celebrity because I grew up near the "Big Basket".

Thanks guys. I played quite a bit when I was younger and I was short enough to make due with them. But now it is really painful to have to crouch over for every shot. Any idea on pricing? I have been hearing between 700-1000, is that accurate?

Thats about right depending on what you get, probably more toward the grand once its all totaled up. Its worth the money for the technology alone. The distance and forgivness you'll get out of a set of irons today vs a 25 year old set will be night and day.

It used to be around 18 when i was young. Now between the lack of playing as often as i'd like and the clubs it is ugly. I do have some free time though and am really interested in getting back into it. With proper clubs I will be forced to accept that I need to practice. That's about where i am now.

My own personal bias is towards Mizuno clubs but don't let that sway you. I'm no great golfer but they are a little harder to hit than somethings out there.

Anything you get thats new will have a face thats one big hot spot and be fitted properly so you can make more consistent contact.

More consistent contact + 20-30 extra yards = more fun playing golf

Is your driver that old? If so be prepared to shit your pants when you swing a new one.

I'd say a good estimate is between 600-1200 depending on what type of irons you want to buy. The biggest thing is getting them fitted to you and since you are so tall you may have to get longer shafted clubs. I have played Mizuno's and found them to be very nice. Right now I play Cleveland TA5 irons which I've had for about 6 years now and still like them. Whatever you decide make sure you get fitted before buying anything. Good luck and let us know what you end up buying for yourself. :biggrin:

one other thing to be aware of is that you should hit the clubs on a lie board when you get fitted. that is where they put tape on the bottom of the club and you hit a ball off a plastic board. the board puts a scuff on the tape and you can adjust the lie angle of the irons so the middle of the flange is hitting the board.
