Announcers (Official Thread)

i didnt see anything outrageous. then again one week its griese, the next its herbie then its mason..

These are completely unrelated issues that you can only link by the broad association that all have been variously criticized by members of Buckeye Nation. But there's no perfect commentator, and calling an OSU game is by definition a pretty big show, which tends to bring out some more outspoken commentary IMO, and with the nation's biggest fanbase and on such an active board as BP anyone calling the games is going to take some shots.

I don't think Mason is necessarily overly critical, but it does seem like he's still trying to outcoach Tressel from the booth, and I think it would be naive to believe he's completely gotten over missing out on his dream job, which he had worked toward for almost 30 years. You can be happy for someone you used to work with and still think you were the better guy for his current job, especially when maybe Mason's own coaching career didn't end quite the way he hoped (fired and doing commentary on a second-tier network).

I'm just waiting for the day we can talk Bob Uecker, Mike Lange or Tom Hamilton (or heck, Gus Johnson) into being the Buckeyes' play-by-play man. I've never liked Paul Keels, though I understand I'm in the minority there.

And yes, I know that Uecker, Lange and Hammy probably don't know the first thing about football. They're just entertaining as all get-out.

As Mike Lange would say, on Saturday the Buckeyes beat NMSU like a rented mule.

I think Matt Millen has been doing a great job. I'm not sure why I find that surprising, but I do.

He comes across as knowledgable and down-to-earth. Doesn't really have much of an attitude or an agenda.

...but what's with all the puns? Fortunately for me, I can laugh at a good pun, but really?

I mean, REALLY?

The one that sticks out at the moment is right after Sabino leveled Stonum on the return. Matt's comment? "Stonum? He sure stoned 'um." I'm going from memory, so I'm sure that's not quite right, but you get the drift.

How does Mike Patrick still have a job? This guy is a trainwreck. He's the most awkward announcer in sports and he has no clue what he's talking about. Constantly making mistakes and making a fool of himself.

I used to love to make fun of him, especially with "Brittney Spears-gate", but it's just embarrassing to listen to him now, to the point I almost feel sorry for him. I remember one time this weekend he had the QB who took the snap wrong, the ballcarrier wrong, the play wrong, the tackler wrong, and the names of the teams backwards. And that was just on one play.

Lately Matt Millen is the reason I mute the TV. I can't explain it, anything he says just crawls right under my skin. I can probably pick it out, but right now I dont want to try and analyze it. I dont think I'll get the urge either. Anyone else have this feeling?

Yeah, but I'm a Lions fan, so I may be more than a little biased.

Millen's tone of voice is so "I know what I'm talking about and if you don't believe me you are an idiot"... but we all know how well he did with knowing what he was talking about. Unfortunately his partner seems like a pushover....

Secondly, I watched some of the replays from previous OSU-scUM games and where in the world did they get a few of those groups. The 2001 crew was laughable at best.

Jessie Palmer. I want to hit him in the head with a blunt object. Hard.
I want to strangle him with one of his ties, but I don't think it'd be long enough.

Call me crazy, but when Patrick, Theisman and the crazy ol' punter were doing Sunday Night Football, I thought they were the best team doing pro games.
Patrick is definitely getting senile, though, and hopefully this will be his last year. I can't imagine his performance is good enough for any major network anymore.

I second that. While watching CU-OK ST I was asking my wife (as if she'd know) "Jesus, who is calling this game with Fowler and James? He sucks!" I didn't think it was possible for anyone to add less value to a college football broadcast than Paul Maguire . . . until I listened to Jesse Palmer Thursday night.

I agree, Matt Millen has been great. Millen and Spielman are my favorites. I thought he'd be a PSU homer but I think he's more of an NFL guy now and seems to leave his Nittany Lion past at the door. I forget what game it was but I really liked him going into what is was like when Woody recruited him and how much respect he had for him and how hard it was to tell Hayes that he picked Penn State. I'm guessing he bolts the college coverage and does NFL full time next year.

In his defense you have to make it short to get a big knot :slappy: I can only imagine how short Troys tie was at his Heisman ceremony. That was an epic knot.
