Alex Grinch leaving Washington State to become Urban Meyer's co-coordinator at Ohio State

Alex Grinch, who has helped to elevate Washington State's defense the past three years as the Cougars' defensive coordinator, has agreed to join Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State, sources told ESPN.

Grinch, 37, will fill the 10th assistant's position and be co-defensive coordinator on the Buckeyes' staff. He's originally from Grove City, Ohio, and played his college football at Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Moving back to Ohio gets Grinch and his wife closer to their families.

Under Grinch's guidance, Washington State finished 74th or better nationally in scoring defense all three seasons. The Cougars were 56th this season. In the three seasons prior to his arrival, Washington State never finished better than 97th nationally and was 117th in scoring defense the year before he came.

WSU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is heading to Ohio State as Buckeyes’ 10th assistant

Per a report from Bruce Feldman Thursday afternoon, Grinch will now take his talents to his home state of Ohio, where the Grove City, Ohio native will join Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ 10th assistant coach.

As of Jan. 9, a NCAA new rule goes into effect allowing each football program to add a 10th assistant coach.

Meyer has yet to announce Grinch’s new title, but Feldman reported that Grinch will be Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator alongside the Buckeyes’ current defensive coordinator, Greg Schiano — who got the Tennessee head coaching job in November, only to have the Vols renege on the offer.

Sources told The Seattle Times that being closer to family factored heavily into Grinch’s decision to move closer to home because a family member has been ill, and Grinch’s hometown of Grove City is about a 15-minute drive from Columbus. Grinch played his college football at Division III powerhouse Mount Union, in Alliance, Ohio.

Feldman reported Thursday that Grinch turned down, more lucrative other offers from other schools so that he could work with Meyer at Ohio State.

Sources said Grinch informed the WSU players of his impending move shortly after rumors surfaced mid-December linking him to the Ohio State job, and was upfront with his defense about his reasons for leaving.

And to continue piling on, Tom Herman's offense's performance at Iowa State:

2009: 364.7 ypg / 20.5 ppg
2010: 317.4 ypg / 21.7 ppg
2011: 386.5 ypg / 22.7 ppg

That's awfully underwhelming on the surface. In fact, those are pretty bad numbers. He turned out okay.

Now, lets take a look at Grinch:
2014: 442.3 ypg / 38.6 ppg (year prior to Grinch)
2015: 416.8 ypg / 27.7 ppg
2016: 406.2 ypg /26.4 ppg
2017: 323.6 ypg / 25.8 ppg

Couple things to consider with Grinch:
- He coached a team that ran the "air raid" offense; thus, his defenses spent a lot of time on the field, and given the nature of their offense, were in a lot of shootouts.
- The PPG is pretty impressive given the above.
- The YPG this year is outstanding.
- His defenses forced a lot of turnovers. Part of that, again, may have been the nature of the games they were in; but, impressive none-the-less
- He did all of this with 2 and 3 star recruits.

Bottom line, when judging young coaches coming from lesser programs, it's wise to consider the talent available to them, and look deeper than the surface statistics...or just one friggin' meaningless bowl game against a pretty strong program.

His defenses were the most impressive Mike Leach has ever had, thats for sure.

Much less talent than Ohio State AND handicapped by a Air Raid offense.

He will do just fine here. Anyone putting too much into the Bowl Game is doing just that, putting too much into it.

Saban also wanted Grinch for his staff but, hey, what the fuck does he know?

That's a damn fine lady he has himself there, already a fan of her! Really excited for this hire. Young coach that can come in and learn from Schiano/LJ Sr. If he can ring in that 3rd down defense efficiency then he will be a homerun hire. Also speaks volumes that Saban wanted him on his staff. If he can turn around Wazzu's defense with the talent he had in Washington then I think he can do pretty well with 4/5 stars. Hoping he is a long term coach if he pans out.

According to Ohio State’s faculty, staff, and student directory, however, an Alex Grinch is already part of the OSU football program, listed as a staff employee with the job title “Director-Football Operations” and a working title of “Director of High School Operations.”

Grinch is expected to be named a co-defensive coordinator with the Buckeyes. What position he may be helping out with, however, remains to be seen.
