Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

ALEX GRINCH NAMED CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND SAFETIES COACH, TAVER JOHNSON NAMED CORNERBACKS COACH AND SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR

With Ohio State's spring football practices set to begin in one week, we finally know what the Buckeyes' new assistant coaches' specific roles will be.

Alex Grinch has been named the Buckeyes' co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, while Taver Johnson – who was already named as the cornerbacks coach – has also been named special teams coordinator.

Grinch takes over the safeties coach role from Greg Schiano, who remains on staff as the Buckeyes' lead defensive coordinator, and the co-defensive coordinator title from former cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, who left to become the secondary coach of the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Coombs was also the special teams coordinator, so Johnson takes over both of those responsibilities.

Recruiting at Ohio State ‘Rare Opportunity’ for Alex Grinch

Alex-Grinch-Coaching-e1522531633884.jpg

For college coaches, the emblem that they wear on their polo shirt or pullover while on recruiting trips can act as a skeleton key.

Logos can open doors with barely a knock and how-do-you-do.

When the Ohio State football coaches go into high schools or homes, their mere presence is an event. Doors swing open, hands are extended, and conversations begin with nary an icebreaker.

That’s how it is for most of the top programs in the nation, but that’s not how it is everywhere.

For Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, it’s certainly been a new experience for him. The goals while out recruiting, however, have never changed.

“I think the initial conversation is certainly different,” he said. “The initial phone call and getting guys to call you is a little bit easier than in some of my past stops. But in the end, it’s about making sure you’re getting the right student-athlete to bring into the program.

“There’s more to it than just that initial reaction, but there is a brand attached to Ohio State, and that’s putting it mildly. It’s a rare opportunity to have that brand on your Nike pullover or your polo, so you better take advantage of it. But you also know it’s an awesome responsibility that comes with that too.”

Grinch spent time coaching at New Hampshire, Wyoming, Missouri, and Washington State, and in total at those four stops he was the primary recruiter for just one 4-star signee. Recruiting rankings are far from perfect, but it does give you an idea of the differences between his previous stops and his current location.

Sweet Home Ohio
Grinch is an energetic coach and recruiter who believes in the places and systems that he sells. As an Ohio native and lifelong Buckeye fan, what he is selling now is everything he has ever believed in.

And even though Urban Meyer likes to hire coaches with Ohio ties, Grinch doesn’t think his background will be the draw that brings players in.

“I think my excitement about the university or my knowing of Columbus or this state, does that translate to a recruit, it’s tough to gauge that,” he said. “I think in a lot of ways the University from a sales standpoint, you kind of present what’s there, and it’s a pretty good product. And from a football standpoint, it’s a pretty good product.”

Sounds like he's receiving some overtures for the vacant Oklahoma DC gig, per Football Scoop:

Another name sources tell FootballScoop has been connected to the Oklahoma defensive coordinator opening is Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. However, now that Urban Meyer has officially announced his impending retirement, one has to wonder if Greg Schiano will find employment elsewhere and Day will hand the defense over to Grinch.

Grinch and his wife are both Ohio natives, and the 37-year-old left his post as Washington State’s defensive coordinator with the understanding he’d been next in line to run Ohio State’s defense if and when Schiano left Columbus. Considering Schiano is in his third year at Ohio State, the feeling is that his time in scarlet and gray has run its course.

I haven’t been impressed with Grinch (yet) but if Saban wanted him on his staff then that is some high praise. If Schiano leaves I would like to see Grinch get a bigger role in DC and for the love of god find a new LB coach.

I don't think we have any good insight yet.

The only thing we can say for sure was that the combination of Schiano/Grinch/Davis and this years level of talent/experience did not produce acceptable results.

The positive for him, in my mind, is that he was the guy Urban wanted to be his DC when Urban assumed Schiano was leaving. You add Saban to Urban in wanting Grinch and then I think he gets some serious benefit of the doubt until we see what he does as the actual DC.

Yep plus he's an Ohio guy. I think a good chunk of it was Schiano being stubborn with his schemes when it was clear we weren't able to play that way with the players on the field. It happens sometimes but I wish he would have shown a willingness to try to adapt. None of this means Schiano is a bad coach but it does show stubbornness and they didn't fit together. Davis has to move on at this point but the rest is up to them.

Alex Grinch Will Face Familiar Rival In Rose Bowl

Ohio-State-Defensive-Coordinator-Alex-Grinch.jpg

The 2019 Rose Bowl will be the first matchup between Ohio State and Washington since 2007.

In that game, Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes beat Tyrone Willingham’s Huskies, 33-14. In the 11 years since, both teams have changed coaches a couple times.

But there is some familiarity between the coaching staffs.

OSU co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for Washington State from 2015-2017. In each of those years, his Cougars faced off with Washington in the season-ending Apple Cup.

That means that not only does Grinch have some insight into what the Huskies might try to do in the Rose Bowl, Washington’s coaching staff knows what Grinch likes to do as well.

“He was always tough,” said Washington offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan. “Regardless of where Washington State was, you knew he was going to pose a lot of issues. And that’s certainly the biggest game of the year always for us.”
