Alamo Bowl - Texas 26, Iowa 24 (Dec. 30, 2006)

Of the Big 10 teams that played thus far I think it is reasonable to say that only one has totally stunk up the joint. Iowa isn't one of those, neither (all jests about choking aside) was Minnesota. There is a common characteristic of these other two bowl qualified Big 10 teams that have lost.

Both Minnesota and Iowa played TSUN, Wisconsin and Ohio State, they also played Penn State (who themselves played the top 3 teams in Conference play).

Purdue, sporting a better record than Minnesota or Iowa played neither TSUN nor Ohio State, but fell to both Wisconsin and Penn State. Had they been forced to play the other two top teams they would certainly have ended up with a 3-5 conference, 6-6 overall record and a berth against a well matched CUSA squad.

Purdue is also the only one of these bottom tier bowl qualifying teams from the Big 10 that did not play well in their bowl game. Looking at the records side-by-side, I'd say they did not earn the right to be there in the first place.

As much as the officiating gaffes in Bowl Season anger Jeffcat, it irks me every year when a team skates into post season competition from the Big 10 without playing the strength of the Conference.

One day that pass for Purdue (or another team in another year) will have to be made a thing of the past. Earn it.

So, after a brilliant 6-7 season with losses to Indiana, Minnesota, and Northwestern, can we officially return Iowa to "also ran" status in the Big Ten?

And can we stop it with all of the nonsense about Kirk Ferentz being a great coach?

Tate and Ferentz deserve each other - two overrated whiners who love to read their own press clippings and blame others when they screw up.

Hawkeye fans calling this a "moral victory" on the scout boards. What kind of programs claim "moral victories"? Yup...also rans.

Well, at least now I understand why Ferentz earns those big bucks. :slappy:

I have to say that I was amazed. When Texas took the lead, I figured that Tate was about to have his emotional downfall and it would become a rout. But then they pull themselves together and I thought, hey, maybe the Big Ten pulls this one out.

I don't know how often they practiced that trieck play but it was clearly not executed well and the risk of not executing seemed very high to me. All you need is a field goal, your team has played their hearts out to have an opportunity to beat a team few gave them a chance to beat, and you call that play.

Yep, I understand why he gets the big paydays.

Coaching was also a huge factor in the play that stopped the momentum in the game for Iowa. The play that would have made it 21-3 had the TD called back due to the receiver being ineligible because of the formation. Ross got a pick in the end zone on the next play, and Texas got on a roll after that.

That was ugly. But I'll take it.

We have very little talent at linebacker. Before the year started, I had a lot of hope for Robert Killebrew and obviously Sergio Kindle, but neither of them really lived up to expectations. I'll excuse Kindle, it was his first year. We got what we expected out of Bobino. Our best linebacker is Scott Derry. Who? Exactly.

Aaron Ross. He really hasn't been a great cover corner at all this year. Anyone who has watched any UT games this year knows that. He won the Thorpe in part due to the lack of competition. But he also won it because he's made a ridiculous number of huge plays this year, anyone who has watched any UT games this year should know this as well. See the interception. Yeah, it's frustrating to see the Thorpe winner get burned, but he certainly makes up for it in other areas.

We have no running game. I blame the scheme. There just weren't any holes despite having a nice surge from the middle of the o-line. Screw it, just run the no-huddle with Colt. That seemed to work.

Speaking of Colt, he worked his way back to normal once he got his into a rhythm. He understandably had some rust after all he's been through. I'm excited to see what he does next year. I have full confidence in a 100% healthy Colt McCoy. He'll be invited to New York before his career is over.

The penalty that called back the Iowa TD was lame, but it was the correct call. It sucks that it happened that way because people are going to be pointing at that as the reason they lost. There goes some of the luster (as much as an Alamo Bowl victory can have) from the win.

It has to be considering Mark May was drooling over Texas' offensive line this preseason.

Did I say that? :roll1:

There is a reason both scUM and OSU went undefeated in conference play till the last weekend for the first time in who knows when. There is a reason Wisconsin went 7-1 in conference play (other than the fact that they missed OSU). The conference sucks.

You implied as much. While Purdue got whipped by a mid-level ACC team, 6-6 Minnesota dominated 7-5 Texas Tech, until they got "Masonized" :slappy:, and a mediocre Iowa team played a much better Texas team (that had 3 less losses than Iowa) toe-to-toe all game. Now unranked Penn State beats #17 Tennessee, so although the conference is 1-3 at this instant, they haven't proved themselves to be "shitty".

As for Wisconsin, they're dominating #12 Arkansas right now...
