No he mentioned what a decade ago he didn't want to be Joe Pa and wanted to retire while he was still in good enough health to enjoy retirement

He did wait until the winter portal closed for entry. If an Alabama player is not already in the portal, they cannot enter until spring.

Unless they changed the rule again, a player can transfer if their head coach leaves at any time.

The SEC has a rule where players can not transfer to opposing SEC teams during the spring portal window. ON3 has reached out to the SEC office to see if this counts as the spring transfer window for Alabama players. If it does, they can’t transfer to SEC schools. Less competition for Ohio State.
