AL MVP: Who you got?

My pick is rather obvious. I was just curious to see what BPers thought. I know the argument against Ortiz is that he doesn't play defense because he's a DH. But if Barry Bonds can win the MVP on his offensive totals alone like he did from '01-'04, I see no reason why Big Papi can't do the same.

The actual vote could very well come down to which team makes the playoffs.

The Red Sox have always been a favorite for me. I'm biased when I vote Papi. I'm torn this year cuz I like the Tribe too. I'm hoping they both make the playoffs. If they play each other...i'd probably go with the Sox.

How in the hell can a guy be a MVP when he isn't good enough to play HALF the friiggin game.


Maybe some of you should go watch a little league practice and see all the work that is being put into teaching kids to play defense which is HALF the game!!

Maybe some are too caught up on what Most Valuable really is. It's not necessarily the most all-around player. It's the player a team can least afford to lose.

For the Yankees, that's Rivera without a doubt.

I think the winner will depend on who goes to the playoffs. Next weekend's series will mean everything. If I had to vote now, I'd vote for A-Rod for two reasons. First, for the sake of being honest, I'm a Yankees fan and I loathe Boston.

Second, and I'm trying my best to see beyond my bias, I do believe that defense means something. If the stats are close, and they are, then the edge has to go to the guy playing the field. And the difference between A-Rod and Ortiz isn't simply that A-Rod plays the field and Ortiz does not. A-Rod is a gold glove caliber third basemen and Ortiz is a liability in the field. Ortiz usually fields the ball off the heel of his glove and his range is limited (that's being polite).

That said, I think you could justify either one... that's just my two cents. If Ortiz wins it, I would hardly consider it an injustice to A-Rod. Again, it will come down to who wins the AL East. I would be really curious to see what Ortiz's offensive stats were the last two or three years in games when he was playing in the field.
