2025 AL CB Na'eem Offord (Oregon Signee)

There are other shoe companies who would love to have Ohio State signed with them. Nike has always paid us off so as to make it look fair but now that UO is in the B1G and gaining in prestige and threat level, Nike is more of a threat than a benefit in My opinion.

I actually 1000% agree. We wear Nike and buy their stuff. That money in part goes to Phil Knight who then supports OU.

Why aren’t more teams going to Nike and telling them “either stop or we are going to wear under armor etc etc”

We are literally directly funding our competition not just nationally but now within our own conference.

Problem is, Nike is the leading athletic apparel brand in the world, and kids love being able to wear the swoosh. Ask Maryland how wearing Under Armor is helping them. I know it sucks, but what you wear matters to athletes. I'm sure there would be a big hit to recruiting if OSU tried to used Saucony or New Balance for example

It's more than Knight. OU knows where their bread is buttered. @ORD_Buckeye would probably chime in here with how much donors are throwing into endowments vs NIL/athletics and the prestige it creates.
I've posted it before. The culture of athletic fundraising has always consciously focused on thousands of mid level Buckeye Club memberships rather than large donors. It doesn't mean we've never had them, but it's not the foundation of athletic fundraising at Ohio State. It goes all the way back to Woody who didn't want a Texas type of star chamber where the big cigars sit around and run his program. Remember his famous quote about big boosters: "they'll buy you the Cadillac one year and the tank of gas to get out of town the next."

Ohio State is one of only a handful of public universities that fundraises at the 500M/year level. Of that, about 6-7 percent goes to the AD in a given year barring some type of major donation. The AD just received its first 8 figure donation a couple of years ago while the academic side has received scores of them over the last several decades including three 9 figure drops. Personally, I don't think that should change. The day Ohio State is directing 20+ percent of their donations to foosball will be the last day they ever see any money from me.

Remember the days of Dan Galbreath having footballers 'working' at Darby Dan Farms. Probably not mucking out stables, but doing chores that entailed building up their bodies, I suspect. Also suspect that the AD raises plenty, with football being the #1 designation of those gifts. Personally am glad that donors recognize the true value of Ohio State's contributions to the students/scholars of the university. Have to agree with pnuts opinion that the recruits do really like the Swoosh stuff, so boycotting it would be cutting off the nose to spite the face (or somesuch homily). Or can liken it to US v China. We keep buying their crap, and China in turn sends fighters and submarines our way. Interesting comparison, no? Nike is a publicly traded company, but all Knight has to do is declare an 'extraordinary dividend', and funnel cash to his Oregon warchest to buy players. Not that he needs to with what he received from taking Nike public. PS, for the haters, do you really believe tOSU could afford Lanning? go Bucks!

You heard it here first....
Phil Knight would throw a check at him to get him to go to Oregon. It’s really no different than any other booster buying a recruit. It’s just more legal when it’s disguised as NIL.
More likely, Nike would design a special shoe for a recruit - Air Lendak, something like that - and give him a percent of the profits. That would be more in the spirit of NIL, bigger ego boost for the recruit, better for brand building, plus a potential long-term revenue stream.

Offord's shoe might be a limited edition (as in few made). Normal marketing 'pull' is to have an established star with his/her name on the shoe, which creates demand. (or so I've been taught). But an untried newbie, well, just don't see the draw outside of family and friends. Maybe the Buckeyes shoulda offered to name a bridge after him, but probably not cool enough. Oh well, just some sour grapes. Buckeye Nation will survive, and thrive, when some of the redshirts show out, all will be forgotten.
