Game Thread Akron at tOSU, Sat. Aug. 31, 3:30pm ET, CBS

Forget it boys…

The point was the OL didn’t play well.

That’s not to say they won’t play better when our best OL player returns.

However pretending I’m saying we suck it way over the top.

But then again I’m used to it.

I don’t think it’s out of bounds to say the OL can play better.

But in the preservation of the snow flakes… we were perfect. We can’t play better than today
Henderson averaged 8.1 ypc. Perhaps part of the problem was with Q who could have been a bit more patient on a few of his runs. Like you said, not the end of the world.

Agreed. My wife and I were talking about that. If I was his father, I would be angry as hell at the coaches for not pulling him sooner.

This was a conversation I was having with a few people over txt during the game. All coaches or college athletes. We all agreed that as players, none of us would come off the field unless we couldn’t go or a coach pulled us off. It was 100% the coach’s miss on pulling him. Perhaps almost on the same level as Hoke leaving Morris in the game. Candidly, I hope they got images on his internals before they put him on the bus home.

I think with Quinshon teams knew what to expect. Maybe we were a bit predictable. Who knows though? What I do know is with Judkins we got behind the sticks which probably got us out of our shell for what’s normal.

I also think Akron set a mission to stop #1 from running the ball. They seemed to have forgot about 32 but they seemed to have a good idea of what we were doing with Judkins.

I think Akron did a nice job with their team strength which was their front 7. Maybe it lead to struggles early but then again we didn’t have Jackson. Regardless we missed a few blocks up front which probably shouldn’t happen in games like this.

Still though our defense outscored Akron, JJ is a machine, Will Howard really played well, our defense settled in nicely, and our special teams weren’t a problem either.

If we leave today only thinking we need to improve up front even though we were down our best OL. Then it was a good day.

The only other pet peeve was that players like Downs were in the game midway through the 4th. We’ve just got to find a way to get the starters out vs opponents like this.

Presser Bullets: Ryan Day Says Will Howard Showed "Poise" and Mostly Good Decision Making, Cody Simon and Donovan Jackson Hopefully Back Next Week

Day also felt that Will Howard showed "poise" and mostly good decision-making in his first game and that Joe McGuire's week of practice and overall consistency led to him starting at punter. Ohio State also hopes to get both Cody Simon and Donovan Jackson back this week.
  • Day opened by saying it was a "great crowd" in Ohio Stadium on Saturday and gave another shoutout to the impact Archie Griffin's had on and off the field. "I just have so much respect for what he's done."
  • On Will Howard's performance: "I'm gonna watch the film and make that determination. I thought he had pretty good poise the whole day, took pretty good care of the football outside that one decision. ... I felt like early on, the three inside guys (on the offensive line), they hadn't played (at Ohio State). ... I think they were a little worked up. ... I think (in the second half) we started to loosen up and have some fun."
  • On Smith: "You can see the talent, and we're gonna play right through just about all of it. ... Sometimes you look at him and you don't even think he's quite human. But he is."
  • Day felt that Smith showed good maturity in playing through an early drop and an early penalty. "He's built different. He is. ... Typically someone with that type of talent doesn't have the discipline and focus that he has. ... He did a great job settling in."
  • On how he grades the run game: "It looked much better in the second half. I just think there were some things off on the interior."
  • On the defense creating three turnovers and multiple sacks against Akron: "It was great. ... We tightened up some coverage a little bit and made (the quarterback) hold onto the ball a couple of times. ... Ball disruption is something we spent a lot of time on this offseason."
  • On Sonny Styles being ready to slide to Mike linebacker against Akron: "We're hoping to get Cody back this week. ... (Styles) is very conscientious, very smart.
  • Donovan Jackson will hopefully be ready to go next week and could have played Saturday if absolutely needed, Day said.
  • Joe McGuire had a significantly better week of practice leading into Akron, which is why he started at punter.
  • Day said it's key for the defensive line to continue trusting its technique and playing fast to create negative plays. "Some of those plays are just flat-out effort."

I can't say for certain, but I spend a lot of time in that stadium (never been in either locker room) but I don't think there are x-ray devices in the visitors locker room.

I think injuries like that go to Rhodes-Doan which is a stone's throw away

I’ve not been in the lockers since the early ‘90s so can’t say either. But it’s not like there aren’t facilities VERY close by if not on prem.

I feel for the kid. Clearly his ribs did the job they were intended to do… but damn… you still hate to see it for any kid. He’s likely OK, but the downside of being wrong just wouldn’t be worth it.

I 100% agree. At one point I thought I saw him coughing up blood. Why ruin a kids season over a game that you have no chance of winning?
